snacks/beverages you DONT miss from childhood

Okay, I thought it was my imagination that green Skittles were once lime. I thought I had it confused with Starburst, where I just double-checked, cherry was originally lime. What’s the fruit equivalent of Good and Plenty? That has lime right? Or did that change too? Ahhh…I’m so confused!

Another, am I imagining it or not? Lifesavers Butterscotch and Butter Rum. There are/were two right? I remember one tasting divine and the other nasty (Butter Rum?) with an odd bite to it. They looked identical and I’d get the wrong one half the time. One would come in the Lifesaver book, but be hard to find on the shelf. Or did it never happen?

Okay, I just found this: https://www.retroist.com/2012/09/11/lifesavers-sweet-storybooks/

“For a long time, the included flavors were very standardized; 2 variety rolls (ie, “normal” Lifesavers), 2 cherry rolls, a tropical fruits roll, a butter rum roll, 2 wintOgreen rolls, and 2 pepOmint rolls”

But I don’t think Tropical Fruits were around in the 60’s. I liked the coconut and tangerine, banana was okay, but I think there was a mixed fruit one too, or was that the clear white one in the five flavor pack? I want to say Tropical Fruits came out in the 70’s, because I distinctly remember the “What flavor’s yours…” commercial with the woman saying “Tangerine…what flavor’s yours?”

the white one is pineapple they were going to get rid of it when kraft took over Nabisco but a social campaign saved it

good and fruity which was red licorice instead of black ……

Green apple has also replaced lime in Runts. Far more irritating is that they’re using the cherry shape for green apple, since cherry is no longer in the mix. :frowning: I still like the candy though, mostly for the bananas. Bananarama just isn’t quite as good.

White lifesavers matter!

I believe now it’s Orange Fanta.

The gum was called “Freshen Up” (“the gum that goes squirt!”). I remember the jingle for the commercial: “She didn’t know (didn’t know!) the gum was loaded”
I had the idea to be a piece of it for Halloween one year, with colored water I could squirt.

Yep, that’s the stuff! Apparently I did too at one point…I wonder if they changed the consistency of the goo/gel, or if I just ended up with a bad batch?

And how did this turn out?

Yoo-Hoo. I’ve had two bottles in my life. The first one was awful, but everyone told me that I needed to shake it more before drinking it. I shook the hell out of the next bottle, but it sucked just as badly.

My grandkids love them. Hasn’t died out as far as I know.

Mister Rogers taught me to wrap it around a banana. I can’t believe I trusted him.

I’m having a fried bologna sandwich and remembered…cold bologna torn into strips. Ugh. My Mom said when she was at the neighbors, one of the boys came come, took a hotdog out of the package and placed in a slice of bread. Guess it’s basically a mini stick of bologna, but still…

That would be a lot harder to transport, because it’s carbonated, and Orange Ade wasn’t.

I don’t know if they still do it, hut in Hawaii it was fruit punch which is the generic go to drink here, available at almost every fountain, anywhere, Pespi or Coke.

actually mcds orangeade was cokes hi-c brand
I remember for years mom would buy punch concentrate and could never not make it tasted watered down

neither could/can most places with soda fountain juice……… unless its premade

Ha! I remember my grandma would cut a piece of bologna and a piece of cheese in strips for me. I loved it!! I must have thought it was fancy!

The best I have isn’t a food but a drink: some people really like Fanta. I find that they get their flavors wrong somehow, not having the tang to contrast the sweetness.

A non-sweet one is lobster. Everyone treats it like this amazing thing. And I pretty much like anything, or at least can eat it. But lobster? Nope. People paid and got me a $30 meal and I couldn’t eat it and felt horrible.

Howabout crayfish/crawdads/mudbugs? I prefer them over Lobster.
