SNL 4/4/09 Seth Rogen/Phoenix

Anyone watching it right now? What does everyone think about it?

I caught the last few skits (starting at the way-too-long singing one) and once I made it to the credits without even smirking, I wondered to myself how SNL has made it this long without being funny… Seriously, there are brilliant sketch comedy writers out there. Why can’t SNL ever get a few?

Did I miss anything earlier in the episode worth catching on Hulu?

Well, having Seth Rogen host certainly doesn’t help :stuck_out_tongue:

Seems like the digital short was trying to duplicate the magic of “I’m on a Boat”, unfortunately without success. Better luck next week, Samberg.

I just watched it and I think you saw the wrong part of the show. Some of the early stuff was pretty good, including the Obama speech that opened the show and the trailer for the new movie “The Fast and the Bi-Curious”.

I try not to chime in on a thread just to be negative, but SNL is (IMHO) really at a all time low, comedy wise…

Almost nothing they come up with makes me laugh anymore, and the musical guests are also frequently sub par.

The only semi funny bit was Madonna and Angelina trying to out do each other with the exotic adopted babies, but that was about the only chuckle in the entire Weekend Update segment.

Its not often I feel embarassment for people I am watching on-screen, but that has been my prevailing take on the past year or two.

Sad to see something that was once so (usually) good hit the skids…

I watch SNL every week on DVR, and I generally cut the show a lot of slack; I’m a big fan, and I think it’s usually a lot better than most folks give it credit for.

But last night’s show was terrible. Every half-decent skit was a remake of a past skit; the commercial for the album with songs about toddlers and aliens, while fairly inspired, was done nearly verbatim on a previous episode. The bit with the comic-strip characters plotting to save newspapers was done maybe a month ago with characters from Broadway musicals.

And I didn’t need to see Phoenix three times. I assume that was due to a lack of enough material to fill 90 minutes. Although the last song did make me realize they were the band who did that song in Lost in Translation.

I think the lead singer is dating or married to Sofia Coppola.

Since the only musical acts on SNL who get to do three numbers are multi-megawatt superstars like U2, Clapton, Peal Jam, or Springsteen, I did find it rather unusual that they’d let a little-known cult favorite like Phoenix do it.

I had high hopes when I full-out belly laughed at the “Fast and Bi-Curious” skit. Also got a good laugh out of the long run Seth Meyers did on the Obamas’ gift exchange with the Queen.

And I dunno, I guess I was in a good mood but I really liked Phoenix. I thought they sounded better than any band has on SNL in years. It made me think they were lip-synching.

But the rest? Crap. Seth Rogen was funnier when he was fat.

I thought it was deadly unfunny. In fact, the last time I thought it was any good was when Rainn Wilson hosted. I suspect that he wrote or cowrote most of the sketches, because the current crew of writers just isn’t getting the job done.

I have to say, I’m a sucker for Bill Hader’s Italian Talk Show Host. I don’t know what it is, but I laugh every time. “I’m Seth Rogen, and I talk just like this.” Makes me laugh just thinking about it.

I agree a lot of the other stuff was flat, though.

Madonna/Angelina was funnier than anything else in the show. Meesa giggles lotsa!!
