Brilliant!
This is the first of these award shows Murphy has shown up for; he was noticeably absent from the previous one(s).
If you believe what he said in the “red carpet” preshow, he was happy to be there, but he did say, then and in the show itself, that it felt like going back to his old high school. And, to be fair, going back for high school reunions is the kind of thing that not everyone is interested in or comfortable with.
But yeah, I too was disappointed that he didn’t perform, or really do anything but acknowledge the standing ovation (deserved as it may have been—it is probably fair to say he saved SNL).
Murphy was upset years ago when they did a video with one of the players as him giving transsexual hookers rides home. After they aired that he was quoted saying he wouldn’t ever come back to the show so I guess some fence mending has occurred. I missed the bit with him on for the 40th show last night so I can’t comment on what happened.
I agree with what a lot of people said here. It sounded good but I don’t know why Miley got that song. Too much Kanye and too many jokes about him wanting to storm the stage. Ha ha, let’s all laugh at his jackass antics. In the Wayne’s World sketch they went to the joke 3 or so times when the show already had the joke earlier.
I like the Californians but they (especially this one) just go too long. I like the joke about vapid and idle Californians who give very California-specific directions to each other but it’s probably about twice or three times as long as it should be for that one joke.
Dennis Miller was Weekend Update for me and I was disappointed that he wasn’t there. Him turning into a conservative shill is disheartening.
I liked it - had several laugh out loud moments for me. As a fan who never misses an episode, I really enjoyed the recreation sketches. Fallon/Timberlake were great as was Jeopardy and Wayne’s World. I only wish Oteri was there so her and Will Ferrell would recreate the Cheerleaders.
Sarah Palin was less of a surprise than VJ would have been.
The biggest head scratcher for me was Jack Nicholson. I have never associated him with the show and don’t know why he was there. He has never even hosted as far as I can recall.
Actually, they *didn’t *cut to commercial at the end of his “speech,” and he was left to stand up their awkwardly and basically say “Uh, guys, you told me you were going to cut to commercial now. Let’s try this again…”
Maybe the director thought “He’s got to do something at least moderately funny, let’s go back to him and see what happens.”
By the way- can anyone tell me which season/episode included Mike Myers doing his amazing Mick Jagger impression while Mick sat right next to him doing an amazinger impersonation of Keith Richards? Last night they showed a still shot of it. It was on screen for at least three-tenths of a second.
I loved the bits with Jon Lovitz, but then I’m a fan of his. Last night some people on Twitter really thought he’d died.
I didn’t mind Miley, but Kanye, yuck. First thing I thought when I saw Sia was “giant q-tip”. I thought it was a joke, then figured out it was her when she started singing.
Yahoo Screen has a bunch of SNL clips.
The love theme from Jaws had me rolling!
What kind of guitar was McCartney playing in the opening with Paul Simon? Beautiful maple top on that thing.
thank you!
Oh, and also, (holy cow, I could keep commenting on this thread *ad infinitum *) I thought Sarah Palin’s line about how much Lorne Michael’s would pay her to run in 2016 awesome (and yes, I realize she did not think of it herself). Also also, I can’t say she didn’t look gorgeous, but really, on a cold ass night in NYC, her outfit was so totally inappropriate, weather wise, season wise, age wise . . . just so obviously “I’m going to show off my great bod and fake tan” and wholey not befitting a woman in her (dubious) political position. The lack of finesse, it burns.
Why would VJ showing up have been a surprise?
According to the authorities at E!,O’Teri, Walkin and Jackson were supposed to be there, if not actually performing.
There are others on the list I don’t recall seeing, but may have been in the audience somewhere.
Walken did an intro… Kanye West, maybe? No jokes though.
I have it recorded, but what is going on? Is it new clips of the old gags, or just running the old gags? I had thought it would be the latter, but reading this thread makes me think it’s the former.
His career as chart-topping solo musical artist has now lasted over a decade (or slightly more than 1/4 the length of SNL’s run- which is not something you can really say about many/any? other guests). If you count his production discography and collaborations, I think he’s by far the most notable figure in American popular music since 2001.
In addition, and most pertinent to SNL, he was a 6-time SNL musical guest over a span of 8 years.
Seriously, in the span of SNL’s existence, how many human beings have met the following criteria: 6-time musical guests with 6 consecutive #1 albums, unbroken 11+ year chart-topping solo careers?
Some new sketches, some re-dos of old sketches, some music, and a lot of retrospective clips packages.
And a lot of drunk people not quite hitting their marks.
Victoria Jackson was there , saw her picture on the red carpet.
141 people were in the cast over 40 years so I would guess all were invited.
