There’s a thread about one of the skits but I didn’t want to hijack.
It was a very strange episode for me. For one, I wasn’t sure for a while if it was a rerun or not. Not being a fan of the genre, I don’t think I knew there *was *a new Star Trek out. I like Chris Pine well enough but is it common for him to be confused with Chrises Pratt, Evans and Hemsworth?I mean, I guess I could understand that - I get Kates Bosworth, Beckinsale and Middleton momentarily confused sometimes- but somehow I’ve never had a problem knowing who he is when I hear his name. Also, wearing a shirt two sizes two small will not make one’s body look like Chris Hemsworth.
Maybe it’s because I was watching in bed half asleep, but everything just felt weird. Who, pray tell, was the musical guest? The lead singer looked like Alec Baldwin doing a parody of the love child of Morrissey and Simon Lebon. What was supposed to be funny about Bobby Moynahan’s Socco, or whatever it was?
I know SNL can be hit or miss but last Saturday’s was just . . . odd. Anyone else get that?
I had trouble staying awake in the 70s for Original SNL, so I think I “saw” a lot of episodes that never existed. (Same with late night reruns of Wild Wild West. But they, like SNL, were weird from the start.) I also once dreamed a video for Against All Odds that was better than Collins’ actual video.
As usual, I only watched through Weekend Update. But yeah, Pine was there to shill for Wonder Woman. Singing his bit to the tune of “Uptown Girl” was kind of a weird choice.
Oh and another thing, I think CP sang in almost every sketch. It got to the point where I suspect he’s got his eye on a part in a musical and was secretly auditioning.
Yes. Those Chris’s are always confused. Heck, I went through a while where I couldn’t remember the last name of the Chris that stared in Guardians of the Galaxy (Pratt, FTR), and kept referring to Chris Pine being the star of that film.
Have you never heard of LCD Soundsystem? They are a fairly well known indie band (I mean, not Arcade Fire levels of known, but known), that recently got back together.

No, no I haven’t. I thought they were quite weird. Or maybe I was just distracted by the lead singer (see my earlier post). They didn’t make me :dubious: as much as Father John Misty from a few weeks ago, though.
Hmmm, what do you find so weird about them? Or Father John Misty (who I don’t really find weird as much as dull, but I’ve never really cared much about folk music)
I guess the visuals more than anything. I just watched the video and while the music wasn’t too terrible, I can’t quite figure out what they’re supposed to be. The chick playing the keyboard looks like someone had to have their mom fill in because the real keyboardest is out with mono or something and the kid with the hat is cracking me up with his 1980s style dancing I think I’ll rewatch the whole thing and see if I feel the same way. Maybe someone slipped something into my drink.
Father John Misty was just one big WTF moment for me. The stupid faces, dramatic hand gestures and his “dancing” <Kramer> That aint dancing, Sally<K> Also the songs sucked.
(no offense to you or anyone else who is a fan)
I think it’s also that Chris Pine is the least famous of all the Chrises out there, so it’s easy to forget which movies he was in in the first place. Still, they are all pretty similar looking, and it was a good monolog theme, I thought. I loved the cold open with Joe and Mika. The Star Trek skit was good, as was the guys on surveillance with the goofy boys in the apartment. The Handmaid’s Tale skit kinda fell flat for me.
Joe and Mika was a “huh?” for me because I didn’t know who was being referenced. I’m sure there’s comedy to be derived from a parody of The Handmaid’s Tale, but that wasn’t it, although I did chuckle at the cheap sight gag (ha!) that was Vanessa Bayer’s eye
I watch SNL every week, and am not a hater of the show, but this episode was the worst one I can recall in the last few years. The only skit worth rewatching was the Carmen San Diego spoof.
Who was the “Sulu” guy in the Star Trek skit? It seemed implied that the audience was supposed to know who the actor was. I didn’t, and he wasn’t thanked at the ending when guests are usually thanked.
Apparently every time that Saturday Night Live does a Star Trek sketch, they have that same guy (whose name is Akira Yoshimura) play Sulu:
He’s been a production designer on Saturday Night Live for the entire history of the show. Perhaps they keep using him because they’ve never had a cast member whose ancestry is 100% Asian (although Rob Schneider was a quarter Filipino and Fred Armisen was a quarter Japanese). Of course, he now looks ridiculously too old to be Sulu from the original series. (I can’t find any definitive statement anywhere if anyone else has played Sulu on Saturday Night Live.)
I loved the episode, it was one of the best in my opinion in a long time. I’m not a huge Chris Pine fan but I thought he was great and should be doing a lot more comedy. My favorite sketch was the stake-out, which also summed up the episode pretty well, “It’s very fun and silly, but let me be clear captain—they know it’s silly.”
Doesn’t seem that crazy for there to be a Star Trek sketch, since Chris Pine is probably most known for that. He’s promoting Wonder Woman, but it’s not like his character in that is hugely known.
I thought LCD Soundsystem was great. I guess they are a bit different if you are expecting a top 40 pop group like they have a lot of the weeks but I’m glad when SNL goes for something a bit different.
That was admittedly weird. And in the sketches he wasn’t singing in, he was dancing. He has been in a musical, he was in Into the Woods, which I haven’t seen but supposedly he was pretty good in it.
I just noticed that Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton have co-starred in a movie. Like the four Chrises, the two Bills have been sometimes confused for each other. Somebody needs to make a movie about four guys who get confused for each other and cast the four Chrises as those guys.
It was cool to see LCD Soundsystem on SNL, given the history. SNL first asked them to perform on the May 7, 2011 episode. The band’s final (not so final, it turned out) show was April 2, 2011 so they felt that it would be unseemly to perform again so soon after their supposed end. Six years later they finally made it.
