The Georgia mountains get a little dusting from time to time, but the last time we got any snow in Athens that actually stuck to the ground was January 2004. This is real, live, honest to goodness, huge wet flake, messing up the roads SNOW!
My dog has been running around in it like a little furry lunatic.
Oh, it’s sticking, all right. We probably have about 3 inches on the ground, which doesn’t sound like much to y’all north of the Mason-Dixon line, but it’s a veritable natural disaster here. I grew up in Louisville, KY, where it snowed a lot- it’s weird to have a winter with no snow, and I’ve been running around in it all day enjoying the hell out of it. I have a week of jury trials starting tomorrow, and the judge called me about an hour ago to tell me that he’s canceling court, so I get a day off to play.
Unfortunately, our house has a lot of really tall pine trees around it, and I’ve been hearing snap - WHUMP! all day long.
We’re out in Oconee County. At last check, we had 6.5 inches. So far, no power loss, but it has been flickering and the tree limbs have been doing the “snap, crackle, pop” as well.
yea, I’m in Athens, GA. No power in my street (and I live in a nice part of town), no heat. My car got stuck in the snow two blocks from my house, and a nice guy just drove me to my house (so that I wouldn’t have to walk in the snow with cold and wet tennis shoes).
This morning, UGA (my employer) is closed. Still, I’m at UGA, in my desk, because it is the only place that has heat, eletricity, and internet. I may go to the cafeteria to eat, as I have no way to cook at my house.
And the snow is sticking, but parts are also melting… I’m wearing hunting shoes now, they’re better than tennis shoes but no snow shoes.
I love snow and want you to know that snow isn’t always THIS bad!! It can be happy fun time too!!
Is there any way for Athens-ites to hang out at UGA today or something? I worry about my friend because he’s got a 2-year-old.
He actually moved back to Athens a couple years ago so his family could be near the 4 grandparents (all of whom live in Athens). That situation has worked out swimmingly so far with family gatherings and free baby sitting. The only time it would ever be a problem would be if it was freezing out and there was no power in town - because everyone lives in the same town and there’s no where to go in an emergency! Doh!
Hope they get this fixed up soon. Six inches of snow in one night is rough on any town, but especially a town that could never predict it to happen and thus not prepare.
I’m in Birmingham, too, and the snow was beautiful yesterday. However, it was a huge pain in the ass to have to dress and undress my boys - we don’t have snow gear (of course) so they would get very wet and very cold very fast! There is no way I could live with this kind of weather for more than one day at a time!
I was at Georgia Tech during the blizzard of '93. According to the Wiki, the snowfall total was 4", but I call shenanigans. I lived in NJ for the first 18 years of my life, and in Atlanta, we got easily 6 inches, maybe 8. The city was in a panic. The lines at the Kroger were unbelievable - 12 lanes open, each with carts 10 deep. It’s just snow, man! How long do you think you’ll be snowed in?
The official word is that Athens got 6.5 inches. We never lost power- we had a little flickering last night, but our power stayed on. We did lose our cable, phone and internet (same provider) sometime last night and got it back about 3 this afternoon. Oddly, the street behind us lost their power- they must be on a different grid. Some of our neighbors came by this morning and had hot coffee, charged their cell phones, and sat in our heated house for a couple of hours. I live on the west side of town, I understand that the east side was harder hit with the power outage.
Everything is melting right now. I’ve heard that the roads are pretty clear, I’m about to make a liquor store run- I’m out of wine! We have several big branches down in our yard, plus a couple of broken ones that we’ll have to cut down, but no real damage.
I live in Five Points, and most of my area (right next to the vet school and family housing) was without power since last night until tonight at a quarter til 7pm. Woohoo! Internet, heat, and electricity back in my house! Back to the modern ages!
I left work shortly after my comment to go eat at the cafeteria. They had limited menu, but for someone who hadn’t eaten in 22 hours and didn’t know when her power would be back, there was plenty.
I did cook tonight, though. Ah, to have electricity and homecooked food again.
Most of my coworkers were in a similar situation to mine. Only one of them had power at her house (one of the family housing buildings), but no TV nor internet this morning.
