As long as we’re clear that I never said the things you initially accused me of saying, no problem and I accept your apology.
Sorry - wrong thread
I think its cool to have one poster consistently using one long phrase to exactly represent what most other posters express in a specific short phrase.
It brings to mind in the Goedel incompleteness theorem, which Douglas Hofstadter explains using similar kinds of long-to-short code substitutions.
Of course discourse would be impossible if we all started doing this for lots of common phrases, but as long as it’s just a few of us doing it, and doing it consistently, IMHO it injects a bit of humor and life into the tired old “LOL”.
At least he didn’t just randomly pick a phrase for the substitution, but rather used one which had already been “baptised” in a real-world situation.
Not to mention the fact that it was used by jjimm, RitterSport, phreesh, and jjimm a second time all in the thread that introduced it. I’m pretty sure all those posts were before I first used it. Heck, I didn’t even post in that thread. I’m just the guy who picked up the ball and ran with it, ya know what I’m saying’?
Good point! Reading the thread, I see now that it’s actually Colophon who first used it as a straight-up substitution for LOL (the way you do), rather than just quoting it in the context of the change-the-boss’s-autocorrect story.
“You annoy me. Shut up.” is fine.
“You annoy me. I have the moral right and ethical duty to stop you” - which some of these posts do imply - is not. That is just flat wrong, on a message board or in the congress.
It is perfectly valid at a formal dinner party, but that is not us, is it?
Um…
Is that seriously how you read his posts? What kind of persecution complex do you have?
Um - uh? Whose posts? I didn’t single anyone out. And no-one is persecuting me, I’m quite clear on that. But don’t you think people are getting a bit out of hand with insisting that Snowboarder Bo Must Be Stopped?
This started out with a simple Pit thread, that Snowboarder was being annoying, but that weird ATMB thread …
People are treating an internet message board like a formal dinner party, where everyone must be on their best behavior for a peaceful exchange of meaningless chatter - all very nice in its place, but not really appropriate here, is it?
And people are acting like this is their board and every one must play be the rules they approve of. This is just getting nasty.
To be honest, I had no idea that quarries and throwing stuff down into them were such taboo subjects.
I don’t see anyone getting nasty. I’m not sure where you’re getting that.
That’s not how you play hackysack.
When I was in college we played full-contact hackysack.
those pro football players have some visible sacks, jus saying
I find this whole “Quarry” affair to be astonishingly bizarre. The extent to which it has gotten people riled up is amazing to me. I’m certain that it will become a great part of this board’s mythology in the future, though.
It probably wouldn’t go anywhere except for the pitting and the ATMB thread.
Um… Of course I do. I think we agree and are just talking past one another.
Let’s not worry about it. We are clumsily on the same side.
No, we’re treating it like any other annoying person. Step 1: you ask the person to stop. Step 2, you ignore the person. Step 3, you confront them. Step 4, you ask someone else to come in and stop them. Step 5, you stop associating with them at all.
As someone who used to annoy the shit out of people, I’ve faced all five steps. It’s not something that happens at a formal dinner party, but something that happens in every social circle. People just don’t put up with people who go around annoying people, especially people who are clearly doing intentionally after being asked to stop a specific behavior.
I don’t know where you guys grow up where you think that being courteous to people is something you only do in formal situations. It’s something you do 24/7.
Look, I even admitted that I haven’t even noticed the guy doing it until it was pointed out. But it’s been shown that this phrase, no matter what his intentions, are severely annoying people. The courteous thing to do is stop. You can’t argue that is somehow serves some greater purpose, so continuing to use it after that point makes you a jerk, and, since it is intentional, it jumps up to asshole (and troll, since he admits to enjoying the fact that people are upset.)
And this board doesn’t suffer assholes lightly (and trolls even less so.)
That’s because it IS our board. We are the community behind the board. We contribute the content and the money to run this place. And we do have a collective right to say what is and is not acceptable in our community. This is how all communities work.
Only problem is that the mods are shitty people who don’t give a crap about enforcing the don’t be a jerk rule, so the only way to punish people who are jerks is to be jerks back.
I did? Could you post the quote where I said that?
Wait… Why didn’t ignoring work?
Oh that’s right. You skipped step two.
Snowboarder Bo: while I did defend you, I also agree with other posters that you should strongly consider using the phrase only in “natural” situations – where you are already participating in a thread anyway, and your “LOL” substitution appears where “LOL” would normally be expected – rather than jumping into any old thread SIMPLY so you can insert the phrase. That’s what is annoying people.
