Ya know, the OP has 20 links to my postings with that phrase. Why don’t you pick the ones where I “jumped into any old thread simply to insert the phrase” and it wasn’t “where ‘LOL’ would normally be expected” and show me.
Go ahead. Link it here and then explain how it’s just me randomly posting, not really meaning LOL. I’ll wait.
I think you misunderstand. It’s not that it isn’t a legit LOL moment, it’s more that it seems you look for threads, insert LOL, and leave. The whole purpose of your contribution is to find opportunities to LOL and do nothing else. That’s why it seems artifial.
Well, yes. It is annoying. That is exactly the point people are trying to make. If you want to tell people that you don’t give a shit if they’re annoyed by your behavior, well, you go on with your bad self. But telling people that they aren’t really annoyed by it is just stupid.
I didn’t say they aren’t really annoyed by it, I’m saying it’s a completely ludicrous and stupid thing to be annoyed by.
Telling me it’s inappropriate to note that something that is meant to be funny was, in fact, funny is ridiculous. Suggesting that the subject matter, such as the aforementioned nursing pig picture somehow deserves more of a post than “that was funny; I laughed” is mind-boggling.
But hey, if you want to write a mini-treatise on every funny pic, like the one that looks like a car driving into a huge butt, you go right ahead. As for me, no, I don’t see that I need to do anything other than acknowledge that it was funny and it made me Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there.
I’m mostly irritated because I originally thought the “let’s go down to the quarry” thing was funny until you overused the shit out of it and have now turned it into some kind of federal case. Now it’s not funny anymore, it’s just “that annoying thing Snowboarder Bo does.” Thanks for nothing, dude.
I have NEVER complained about it, for cripes sake. Worst I ever said was that I found midly annoying but no worse than many other things. I was explaining what ANOTHER poster had said and providing a different perspective. You seem to refuse to even try to see what a group of people are criticizing you about.
I see that less than 2 dozen (at the time) uses of the phrase, always in context, somehow pissed people off enough to not only start a Pit thread but to go running to the mods in ATMB. I see that more than one person has lied about me, although only one so far has apologized. I see that people are so upset about an innocuous phrase that they become irrational.
But no, I don’t see any of that as a reason to change my own behavior.
I’m not the one derailing threads, or making up lies to smear another poster, or accusing someone of trolling, or appealing to the powers-that-be to fix a problem that exists only in their own heads and which any of them could have fixed by themselves without anyone else even knowing they had done it.
You keep saying this, yet what you apparently fail to recognize is that context is a shared component of communication. To use something in context requires that the context and the usage be understood by, if not all, at least a majority of your audience. If something is truly being used in context, people don’t look at your comment and scratch their heads, wondering what the hell those words are doing there.
Saying to yourself “I’m going to let this set of words stand arbitrarily for that other set of words” is NOT “context,” no matter how many times you link to the obscure reference that motivated your [del]retarded[/del] iconoclastic usage.
I have conflated the two threads, that is true. We should focus here on the simple question if Snowboarder Bo is annoying everyone. Obviously not, according to some posts.
It’s not taboo. It’s annoying. Just not annoying enough to Pit or Ignore you in my opinion.
But even more annoying is my inability to just let this drop. Since fourth grade I have thought that “I might not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it” one of the silliest positions possible. Why not go defend the rights of someone you agree with instead?
Now I find myself raging to the defense of someone using a silly phrase that I find mildly annoying myself, a someone who is quite capable of defending himself and seems to enjoy doing so.
I got to say, replacing LOL with “Let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there!”: not really that funny. This thread: Hilarious.
I know I see this kind of stuff occasionally on other boards, But no one else seems to have mastered the “torches and pitchforks routine” quite like the SDMB.
