So, a Dingo did take her baby?

Yes (if you could call it that); awarded by the Northern Territory government in 1992 for wrongful conviction.

$900k for Lindy, and $400k for Michael.

Nawth Chucka, you saved me calling Symes on his posts.

Princhester has already mentioned other dingo attacks and there was this one last year. It’s another take on what happened.

I was working in North Queensland when Azaria disappeared. The Chamberlains were viewed with a lot of suspicion- their religion probably didn’t help, nor did their aloofness and (seeming) lack of compassion shown.

However, that was not what convicted them. There was a certain amount of scientific evidence which indicated blood in the car (this was later demonstrated to be incorrect). There also seems to be some contradictions about the finding of babies clothes and whether or not something sharper than the teeth of a dingo was used on the clothing. There was also some theory that one of their other children may have been responsible and their was a cover up (remind anyone of a young beauty queen?)

Anyway, it seems it is finally over. I think people today are far more aware exactly of how dangerous dingoes can be- and especially if there is cross breeding.

Your feelings, prejudices and biases, which you admit are not based in anything factual, are nonsense and useless to intelligent discussion.
When one feels they’ve been treated ‘Pit worthy’, they report it. But I’m sure you know it wasn’t or you would have, rather than your passive-aggressive comment. As always, you’re welcome to start a Pit thread about anything you like, including (but not limited to) me.

Why would a dingo cross be more dangerous than a dingo?

Why would people have thought that a dingo couldn’t possibly have killed a baby?

The dingo did eat her baby after all?

Now I get it, finally! Until a couple of days ago I’d never seen the original news item so missed the point of all those jokes years ago.

nm

Still, I don’t think even that would happen in the States, where usually they just say, “Sorry, we made a mistake. You’re free to go.”

Even if really was The Dingo in the Tent with a Rope, does anybody else have a problem with the fact she took a two month old baby camping in an area with wild animals running around and left it unattended long enough for a dingo to get it? I’ve never reproduced or been responsible for a baby for any length of time and even I can see the inherent “very bad potential eventualities” possible in that situation. In fact, you’d think "don’t leave the babies alone or more than arm’s reach away when there are wild animals nearby (and I don’t care if wild animals are adorable little koalas wearing sailor hats and riding around on the backs of wallabees, they’re still potentially dangerous {and dingos are dogs and dogs are carnivores}) would damned near be tattooed onto our DNA by now.

two things here.

Sampiro, up till Azaria’s disappearance, there hadn’t been any worry about dingos taking children, especially from the camp-ground at Ayres Rock.

Syme, the camp-ground that the Chamberlains stayed at has been closed since the mid 80’s, I think. The closest camp to Ayres Rock now is at Yulara, about 15 km from the rock and in quite an urbanised environment. I stayed there in 1999 and no one even suggested looking out for dingos, although we made our share of “dingos got my baby” jokes.

I don’t have a problem with that. As stated above, at the time, dingoes really weren’t known for cold blooded predation on small children. And for all that Americans like to go on about Australia’s deadly critters, leaving aside what we now know of dingoes, it’s hard to think of anything in the relevant region of Australia that might carry off a baby. We have nothing comparable to bears or cougars on this continent. For all that you might worry (albeit jokingly) about koalas or wallabies, the fact is that worrying about them as predators is ludicrous.

And continuing in that vein, bear in mind that at the time, many Australians simply didn’t believe the Chamberlains because they thought that the idea that a wild animal had taken Azaria was ludicrous. So your view makes Lindy’s position impossible. She was a murderer because the idea that an animal had taken Azaria was ludicrous, or alternatively if an animal did take Azaria then Lindy was irresponsible because the idea that an animal would take Azaria was a real possibility.

For the first point, the crosses tend to be larger animals with larger teeth and muzzles. Due to size they require more food. Most attacks on livestock are supposedly due to cross breeds. There is a suggestion that the cross breeds can be more aggressive although I don’t think there has been any real proof.

The other point has been addressed by earlier posts. I would add that although (at the time) people in the outback or had experience there recognised that dingos could be dangerous, there was no well known history of attacks. It was more less not thought about too much.

Calling someone a bigot is not on when they are clearly not, that is what pissed me off.

I just do not feel that a dingo took the baby, simple as that and I have seen no real evidence to prove it 100%. Citing other dingo attacks as proof is wrong just as citing other human attacks on babies is wrong. It is not proof it is just evidence that it may have occurred. Like I said, I grew up in the middle of this and yes I may well be wrong but meh I am not the judge.

I cited other attacks because you appeared to be saying that the idea of a dingo attacking a baby was inherently implausible. You haven’t stated any rational case as to why you think the Chamberlains did it. The entire original case against them has fallen apart based on later findings and information. Anyway, I don’t see much point in a discussion with someone who “just feels” things. I accord your views the weight you have been able to put behind them. Thanks for coming.

:D. Awesome, ain’t it?

Dingo crosses have been shown, in study after study, to require an even greater amount of baby. Please.

That’s really funny when we are discussing an actual child.

Hey, Dad was there during the War and liked the place. You guys were encouraging immigration for technical guys in the late forties or early fifties, and he considered moving there.

Sorry for your loss, I honestly dint know.:frowning:

After following this thread, I think I should apologize for my lame attempt at humor early on–at the moment all I could think of was Elaine Benes and that stupid dance of hers. I misjudged the tone of the incipient discussion quite badly. Sorry about that.

My apologies if I have given the wrong tone here - I haven’t lost a child. I was referring to Azaria and her death. I have no problem with broad brush jokes but when we talking specifically about a person I do get a little thin skinned. The same happened here a few years ago with the child that was killed by dingos on Fraser Island and the lame jokes that followed.

It was not my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable but in the context of a childs death- albeit 32 years ago- direct jokes (to me) seem unnecessary.
