So, Dhani Harrison just released his debut solo album

Here is the first single.

I can’t say I’m too impressed, although I understand why he would pick a style of music different from his dad. It’s OK, I guess. I really hope some of the stuff on the album is closer to George though.

A chip off the old block…

Fascinating. I found it very listenable, in part because its a good song, but also because there is SO much to unpack in it.

It’s a solid song worthy of listening to it on its own merits. Man, did Dhani learn his craft at the feet of his father. All to the good - some great George-ian (Georgian seems wrong) elements, but clearly being applied by someone trying to do their thing, not merely replicate.

The overall throughline of the melody stands out and is interesting; the use of harmonies, time changes, incidental sound fragments - all interesting and they fit musically. I wish Dhani had more organic tones in his bed tracks - the core is a blurty synth tone and the main beat sounds like he got the drums from Nine Inch Nails’ Closer. Dhani’s subject material and emotional appeal would benefit from a lighter tough on the arrangement. He sounds just like his dad and neither has a loud or nuanced voice, even while they express nuanced ideas and emotions. Their voices need a bit more room to breathe.

Thanks for sharing.

It took him this long? ISTR that he was the driving force behind completing his father’s final album after his death.

Although it’s clearly a different style, I could hear a lot of George in that track. Particularly the chord changes. I think it’s great he went his own way and didn’t try to just redo his dad. Electronica is not really my bag, but, as far as it goes, I think that was a pretty good tune.
