So I got laid off yesterday.

Quite out of the blue, too. Apparently, our company has been losing cash rapidly the last two months. Unfortunately, they didn’t really mention this to any of us. So, now, with a 6 month old daughter, I’m out of a job. Luckily, my wife works, but she’s a teacher so we’re not really rolling in the dough.

So, back to the great job search. I’m sure it’ll be easy, what with the economy in the tank and everything.

Anyway…anyone in the Columbus, OH need an HVAC/Plumbing engineer?

Well, that certainly sucks. I’d be irritated at a company not giving you some kind of warning: “hey guys, we’re on rough times, so… job security might not be perfect in the next few months.”

Good luck in the job search!

That sucks massively. It’s a scary time to be unemployed – if you want to huddle together and commiserate with others of us dealing with it, we’re yonder.

Apply immediately with every temp agency in town, for “light industrial” assignments. Every assignment 1.) brings cash into the house, 2.) gets you up, dressed and out, doing something productive rather than being at home fretting, and 3.) puts you and your work ethic in front of prospective employers who might want to hire you on full time at a later date, or who might know someone who would. Network, network, network!

Once you’ve registered with all of the ones who offer that kind of work, get up every day, shower and dress and be ready to walk out the door if needed. Then start phoning around and telling the agencies that you’re ready and available and ask if any new jobs have come in that morning, and to put you on their list for any that might come up (they do keep a daily list of everyone who’s called in proactively – saves time over having to root through files to find people who might be).

Wishing you all the best of luck!

It bites. On the plus side, you get to be a stay-at-home dad and really influence your daughter’s development.

That would have made the situation worse as everyone would have started to look for jobs there and then.

Good luck to you. Sorry about the “out of the blue” nature of that kind of news. My company is not doing well either- I go to work every day expecting that it will be my last. It sucks…hang in there!

Man, that sucks.

I’m just working full-time again after a long looking period in Columbus myself. Good luck, and hang in there!

Sorry to hear your news!

Wishing you luck in the job search!

Unfortunately that’s the economic climate we have right now. No job is really safe and you just have to have some rainy day money saved up. But good luck in getting hooked up in a new job soon.

I think you will get a LOT of support here! Good luck from me! (Been there, done that.)

That really stinks! Good luck to you.

I don’t know what it’s like where you are but at the school district where I used to work they always needed HVAC/Plumbing people. Doesn’t pay like private industry but the benefits are great and they almost never lay people off. When I lost a job 15 years ago I stumbled into a job at the school district and it allowed me to retire recently with a fairly nice pension after only 14 years on the job. Plus I was able to get hired even tho I was of an age where getting hired had started to be problematic. So, I recommend you check it out! And good luck.

Your name’s not Joe, by any chance? :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, best of luck in your job search and enjoy your baby girl in the meanwhile.

No…I’m not an HVAC installer or a plumber…I’m an HVAC/Plumbing engineer…I design the systems and produce construction documents…that the HVAC contractors and plumbers then install.

Anyway, thanks for the support. There are a few openings I’ve seen already that are perfect, and they fit my experience level, so applications will go there first thing Monday morning…maybe I’ll get lucky.

don’t forget city and state!

it takes a long time for applications to go through but worth it.

best of luck.

That really stinks. Good luck.

And in 6 days…new employment! 25% increase in pay from my old job, and I start Monday! I’m quite happy…the company appears to be very strong. A majority of their business is state and federal government projects, so the work hasn’t slowed at all during this economic dip, and it’s even continuing to pick up. Seems like a great place to work…I’m very excited!

Wow! Completely missed this the first time around. Congratulations!

excellent!!!

gov. work can’t beat it. that is what kept the company i worked with floating through the reagan/bush economic stuff.

Good luck. I just missed being laid off this week.
