So, I lost my job today.

I feel for you, being in the same place myself.

I can say, however, that each of my job separations has ended up with a new job that was better in some way than the one I lost.

You’ll get them the next time!

Here’s one thing that’s worked surprisingly well for me: the local on-line job websites. I’ve been off work for three business days and every day I’ve had a nibble from one of them.

Again, good luck and hang in there.

"What in the world ever became of Sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know, she isn’t the same.
Livin’ on reds, vitamin C and cocaine.
And all the world can say is, “ain’t is a shame.” – Robert Hunter, “Truckin’”

Keep your chin up. It could ALWAYS be worse.

Sorry to hear that! My husband is in the same boat. Hope it doesn’t last long.

What do you mean, “sometimes”?

Here’s a link from today’s edition of a career newsletter I get: Four Glaring Signs Your Job Hunt Isn’t Working, and 19 Ways To Improve It

w00t! Good news.

We’re going to work on plans to relocate closer to family in SC. Job market here is not so great. Preliminary research (friends in Charlotte, NC area & careerbuilder.com) indicates better availability of jobs in the tech sector. The cost of living is slightly better (9.8% according to COL calculators I found online).

I’m looking forward to nicer weather, a fresh start, and new opportunities. I’m going down in a few weeks ahead of time to check things out. Change is exciting.

Well, sometimes, it’s just a little pile of shit. Sometimes, it’s all dried up and hard and other times it’s a steaming pile.

The worst is when it’s all over your shoe and stuck in the treads and you can’t get it out and nobody wants you to get in their car and the smell stays on you even when you take them off and toss them in the garbage.

Thank you! I printed it off and stuck it in my planner.

As far as this last job, I really lucked into it. Applied with a temp service and they called me in almost immediately for this job. Did nearly 400 hours with them as a temp and then got hired on. It’s too bad I couldn’t hang in there a bit longer. But I interview well and am not opposed to temping if necessary.

Are you me?

I got my current job through a temp service – excuse me, “temp-to-perm contracting placement firm outsourcing HR functionality for non-HR-savvy engineers” – with a lot of luck, as I had spent some months using a lot of other temp services that wouldn’t so much as return my calls returning their calls. This one, I had a screening interview with the temp service on a Thursday, a technical interview with the employer the next day, and was back at the temp service’s office on Monday to sign the employment contract. (After which, I never saw the temp service people again.)

I seriously feel for you, I got reorganized out of one job, the next job the company closed the call center to relocate it somewhere people have really good tans year long, and the third job in a row they decided to relocate the call center to Texas [and I tended to prefer staying with my husband as the Navy is sort of irrational about wanting their crews actually on the boats…]

If you are within commuting distance of Hartford CT, my company is pretty much always hiring CS for the call center. IIRC the starting wage is $15. Not the worlds greatest, but they have a pretty decent bonus program - if you get your numbers it is like $200 a month. PM me if you like…

Congrats on the relocation plans! Sometimes a fresh start is what helps the most. Hope the personal stuff gets cleared up and the job hunt gets you the right job. Lots of good wishes!

Brown Eyed Girl, I lost my job on February 14 of this year (though they paid me to the end of the month, bless their nasty hearts). I started my current job March 5. So that’s either two or four days unpaid, depending on if you count the weekend. I hate hate hated my last job. I am absolutely over the moon at this one. It was a blessing in disguise having them fire me. My new bosses treat me with respect and kindness, and treat me as if I am actually a human being.

My point is, there is probably something better for you out there. As other people have stated, I hope you get your personal issues worked out, ultimately. But there are employers who actually have a heart and can understand personal issues, and roll with it. You are extremely lucky you have a wonderful husband and child. You will come out of this stronger and happier, I am certain! Good luck!

Isn’t it great when it works out that way?

As I was working within a week of applying at the temp service (I refuse to call them anything fancier), I got the opportunity to strut for my husband and son who were also job searching at the time. I was kinda proud of the turn of events. A little luck, good self-marketing and a good service paid off.

Of course, now my husband will be allowed to crow about lasting longer than me. It’s okay, though, I’m glad his part-time retail job is making him happy and restoring the soul his former job sucked out of him. Whodathunk anyone could be happy in retail? Alas, he hasn’t yet found anything in his trained profession, which would certainly pay a *lot *better, and that’s a bit discouraging.

Is our unemployment rate at some record high or something? I’ve heard from a lot of people in the last year that have lost their jobs.

Too weird! My older son was also looking for work at the same time I was! He started his job a week after I started mine. Difference is he hates his job, but he is at least listening to my advice about staying employed WHILE you job hunt.

Truly, firmly believe that all things happen for a reason. Please don’t hate me for saying that. My two best friends in the entire world said that, independent of each other. And they were right.

Sending positive vibes your way.

I look forward to having another Doper nearby, Brown Eyed Girl! Be sure to let me know if there’s anything I can do.

It always gets better. I know it’s hard to believe that while you’re going through it, but trust yourself and your belief that you will get through it and it will all be a memory some day. It sounds like you’re making some progress, and that’s great. Sometimes we have to get dropkicked out of our comfortable rut into something better.

I’m feeling for you over here. I’ve been unemployed by choice for about three months now, and it’s hit the time I need to get back work, pronto. Only the world is prontoing to my tune. Que sera. Just gotta keep on the happy face and keep burning the shoe leather. There’s a possibility for a city job a half hour south that would be worth the commute I’m jumping on that one tommorrow Despite the unwritten requirements to get into substitute teaching I’m just now finding out about, I managed to apply for a few positions with the county online. Maybe I’m too dumb to be discouraged when I hit walls.

Not even remotely close. Here’s a table showing the US unemployment rates.

Yeah, I checked it out just as soon as I posed the question. It just *seems *that way, apparently, wrt people I’m acquainted with. Which, granted, is not that many.
