I’m starting to take a closer look at City of Heroes and Guild Wars. I’ve actually been taking a look off-and-on at Guild Wars ever since I first heard about it. (Which, if I recall correctly, was before WoW was released.) I’ve heard things about it similar to what’s been said in this thread - not a whole lot of content, lots of PvP end-game.
PvP engame doesn’t bother me, so long as it’s not full of one-shotting, or imbalanced by some people having significantly better gear or abilities that aren’t available to others. The GuildWars webpage compares their combat system to “Magic: The Gathering”. Is this true? In what way? If it is like M:TG, there’s really no higher praise. I used to love playing Magic, and the enormous possibilities for combos and strategy were the main appeal. There was definitely luck involved, but it wasn’t just luck.
I’m not usually all that interested in the “superheroes” genre, but almost everything I hear about City of Heroes is good. I just wish I was extremely wealthy and could spend all day trying all such games.
Either would be fun to try. How huge is huge? I have a broadband connection and my computer is constantly running, so I can download 24/7 for a week if needed.
It’s number three on this list of known issues. As I said, it’s a petty complaint of mine. I know there are more serious bugs.
Not that huge. Gig and a half? Three gigs? I’m pretty sure I havn’t given out my 14 day CoH demo… I’ll grab it tonight, I think I know where I left it.
Dunno where this fits into your list, but I quit WoW after my trial month because the competitive side of it was based too greatly on time investment rather than skill. I read that casual gamers can compete thing because the “hardcore” only get neater (but equal) equipment. Once I figured out that was a load, I was done and back to (relatively) even field of Battlefield 2.
>>>Welcome to level 60. We’ve secretly replaced the WoW you loved from 1-59 with Everquest. We hope you enjoy lava because you’re going to be seeing a lot of Black Rock Mountain. But only if you can find 40 other people to group with, silly!<<<
Seriously, you aren’t missing much by waiting. They will come out with additional non-raid content, but who knows when. Molten Core is one huge, boring time sink and you really have to like the color red because that’s pretty much the entire color pallet. And You can forget about setting foot into Blackwing Lair without your whole group decked out in epics from MC. And… that’s pretty much it unless you like grinding for reputation. My server was the first to open the gates to Ahn’Qiraj and there are a bunch of new faction quests. But again, all they did instance wise was open another 20 & 40 man dungeon - not much help for people in small guilds.
I’d wait for the expansion pack or try a different MMORPG. You might find one more to your liking.
I play a lvl 60 hunter on Feathermoon, an RP server, and the role-playing–and fact that RPing generally attracts more mature players for some reason–is one of the things that has kept me at least nominally interested in the game. That, and having made some genuine friends in the game, so it can be a fairly entertaining social event.
I love 5-player groups, but Dire Maul, Stratholme, Scholomance, etc., are getting old. Also, there is no gear left in them which interests me. That is secondary to me, and I am always interested to helping others get better ger, but it’s not irrelevant.
I’ve been doing the big raids–Onyxia, MC, world dragons–and they can be fun to a point, but never as fun as the 5-player groups (there is never any RPing in raids), and the time commitment required is simply unreal. ZG is fun as an instance, but I am very, very sick of having to keep my bank clogged with all the stupid little items you have to collect: bijous, coins, blah blah. When I found out the new instances coming up are a 20- and 40-player raid, with yet more collecting of numerous idiotic little objects, I almost quit then and there.
Blizzard’s having focused exclusively on large raid content for the past 8 months (since Dire Maul was released) is costing them a lot of customers, and rightly so. Why they think the game needs more raid instances is beyond me.
lol very funny. But not quite true. EQ raids were 72 people, there was a progression that could take a guild years to get through before they could even step foot in the “top” dungeon, and they weren’t instanced, so on top of everything else you had to compete with other guilds for the dungeon. WoW ain’t perfect, but it’s a far cry from EQ.
Also, you don’t have to do MC when you’re 60. There’s quite a few instanced 5 man dungeon, and those are a blast. Sure, it sometimes takes time to find 5 people to do it, but in part this is because not enough people are willing to think outside the box. I’ve seen 4 people wait for an hour because they are convinced they need a certain class, rather than trying soemthing like 5 manning Scholo with 3 hunters, a druid, and a warlock. Sure you might not get to the end boss, but the fun you have thinking up new strategies and trying out new stuff usually makes up for it.
Really, there’s a fair bit to do at 60 if you stop thinking in terms of “must to X to get Y” and think outside the box. Even solo - a lot of those dungeons (uldaman, gnomeregon, etc) that I went through in my youth are a whole different experience at 60. You can explore all the nooks and crannies. Sure, you’re not getting phat lewtz, but it’s still fun.
Boy, do I ever have to agree with you there. That’s a really bad design flaw in WoW IMO - the sheer numbers of crap you have to carry around with you if you want to do some of the end game quests. At the very least, it would be nice if there was a link from the object to the quest/dungeon that shows up when you examine the object. I’ve got stuff that I have no clue where it comes from or what it’s for, but I’m afraid to delete it in case it’s the super-widget for Uba Dungeon Raid #6.
I find myself forced to recant this, at least in part. The patch in question has gone live, and my controller (a fairly powerful solo character) immediately encountered a downgraded Archvillain that was still unsoloable. For those familiar with the game content, the Madame of Mystery is still a royal pain–she isn’t very deadly, but she’s got enormous resistances and she has multiple ways to drain your endurance dry. There are almost certainly builds that can solo her, but the majority probably can’t. Also, the Elite Boss versions are actually more resistant to control effects than the originals–they have AV antimez, and when the antimez is down, they have Elite Boss mez resistance (which is higher than an AV’s).
Of course, it usually takes a full team of 8 to take out the Archvillain version, and it isn’t quick or easy even then.
Well, yeah, but you had quite a middle ground In EQ too. Loads of armor and weapons that can be obtained leading up to the higher end top weapons. My lvl 60 hunter was wearing nothing that was a lvl 60 item. His highest level item was lvl 52, and that was a necklace I do believe, or a trinket. There was a whole lot of upper level content as well, and even lower level areas had some higher level content.
Not so in WoW. Now, I realize it isn’t near as old as EQ, and there is lots of time to add content through expansions like in EQ, but the items availible in wow are quite limited in comparison. I admit, there were probably too many items in EQ, but at least there was alternatives. In WoW it is do this or do without.
Well, I guess our experiences are different then. I find it a lot easier to get items for my level 60 hunter that are closer to the “top” items than I ever did with my 65 chanter in EQ. Comparatively, I raided so much in EQ that Mr. Athena threatened to divorce me if I didn’t stop. I don’t raid at all in WoW, but have several blue items that are more than adequate to keep me happy. They’re not the best in the game, but they’re far from the worst.
Jot down the name on a scrap of paper and surf over to allakhazam.com, and search the name of the item. Will tell you what it is used for. I have a fulvine shard in the bank form about 4 months ago that i never ditched because it is used for a quest that i didnt qualify for back then=) I looked at the quest and decided that the reward was interesting enough to stash it in the bank.
Of course I store a lot of stuff on a mule rather than in my bank - like my entire collection of fabrics and tailoring supplies, and 3 bags of enchanting components. I have a mule with 2 bags of snowballs=) [killer in PvP for nailing pallies with to interrupt=)] and I have a mule with nothing but gems and metal stuff.
Oh, I know I can look everything up. It’s just when you have ten items to look up and the group is heading out in 30 seconds, it’d be really nice to have an in-game way to look at your bank inventory and figure out which dohickeys you need to take.
My husband tries every new MMORPG when it comes out, hates it because he can’t solo, and ends up going back to the only one where he can solo all the time: Asheron’s Call.
I played CoH for a while and enjoyed it, then stopped playing when he did. I’m not good at solo play or play with strangers. I’m too lame.
