So, I stopped at McDonald's. it had been a while

I’ve eaten thousands of burgers cooked over fires. They don’t taste like that.

Unless they use a different kind of fire at BK, I don’t know why they would add fire flavoring, then cook it over fire as well. Seems like a waste of one or the other.

I’m in Moscow right now, and they have a Greek Mac on the menu: two beef patties in pita bread, with lettuce tomato, and tzatziki sauce. It’s really, really good! :o

Genuine boiled ribs - yes.

Good for the femurs and xiphoid process.

Whatever BK has or hasn’t, I dislike that flame grilled flavor. Tastes like a burger cooked over coals that didn’t have all the lighter fluid burnt off. (And I’m someone who loves grilling and barbecuing in general. Something about their process just tastes bad to me.)

Anyhow, McDs tastes like it’s always tasted to me. It tastes like McDonald’s, which is exactly what I want when I go there. I enjoy it, and I don’t bother with their trying-to-be-creative burgers. I just want a McDouble or Quarter Pounder with cheese. (Or that jalapeño McDouble they had in the past couple years–I was addicted to that.) No, they don’t taste like homemade burgers, but I don’t want them to.

I made the mistake of trying the horror that they called poutine once. Shudder. I don’t mind McD’s fries, but they don’t make a good base for bad gravy and cheese.

I do get a kid’s cheeseburger meal sometimes when I need a cheap lunch. Get milk and apple slices instead of pop and fries and I can pretend it’s almost healthy. Plus a tube of yogurt and a toy… bonus!

If I want a fast food burger, I go to Harveys and get their veggie burger.

“Flame broiling” is marketing.

There’s a McDonald’s right across from my work. I don’t go there since I started doing Weight Watchers, but I would occasionally go for a grilled chicken salad. Until I noticed that the grilled chicken was always rubbery, tasteless, and, well, wet. Wasn’t just a one-off.

I miss Wendy’s fried chicken, and their Frosties. But I’m content to forgo Mickey D’s completely.

I would much prefer a homemade burger to a fast food burger, and if you check around online you can find recipes to copy pretty much any of the assorted secret sauces [I am particularly fond of [horsey sauce](Copycat Arby's Horsey Sauce - CopyKat Recipes) and big mac sauce, and the oldhoney mustard dipping sauce]

I like to grind the meat myself, and that way I can control the amount of fat and pick which cuts of meat to use as well. I know we have had discussions here about the perfect blends. [I like to add a bit of pork as I feel it helps both the texture and flavor, but I have to make sure that the people coming over to eat don’t have any dietary restrictions.]

Made with real Wisconsin Cheese is also marketing. It doesn’t mean it isn’t true… it means it is a selling point. BK burgers are cooked over a gas flame as they are run on a chain like conveyor belt.

What I have found over the years is the sausage patties, as much as they taste good, seem to be getting cut thinner and thinner every year. I think if they thought they could get a way with deli slicing them, they would.

Right. Which is why doing that *and *adding some sort of flavor are not mutually exclusive or a waste of time. If people like the flavor AND people respond to the marketing, you’ve got two goals and two ways of meeting them.

I’m not questioning that the burgers are run through a conveyor belt of flames. I’m saying that alone isn’t enough to account for the flavor, particularly as they’re gas flames, and the taste is reminiscent of wood smoke.

Generally, their coffee is good. Only reason to go there, and the only thing I ever order there. I carry a pristine McD cup in my car, smuggle it in, and go for a refill when they’re too busy to notice. Once they cheerfully filled it and said “Where’d you get the cool cup? We don’t have those here.” I love places that have who-gives-a-shit counter staff. Another place a counter women saw me walking in with the cup and heding for the refill counter and yelled out “If you fill that, you’ll have to pay for it, I saw you bring it in.” She’s probably card me if I asked for senior discount.

I have yet to see any proof otherwise.

Do you steal from other establishments too? Or just McDonald’s?

I’m glad I’m not the only one who had the same thoughts about this post.

Stealing from a bunch of people making minimum wage… High Five Dude!!

Dude, not cool.

Let me put this out there:

  1. I like McDonald’s. I like almost everything on the menu except the Filet 'O Fish, which is poison. And the McRib, which even McD’s know is all marketing related.

  2. I even like Big Mac’s, but they are honestly worse than most burgers on the menu.

  3. While liking McDonald’s, I am the first to admit Burger King, Wendy’s, and Checkers have superior burgers and are the better option.

In fact, the gradual elimination of the $1 menu has reduced my visits vastly. I prefer Checker’s, who offer a better value menu and make better burgers.

…So That’s what happened to their burgers! Stay clear of the fries, will ya…?

Had McDonalds fries today; still that good…
