I am a libertarian and i am not enjoying this ballot mayhem one bit.
Libertarians want a smaller government, 'tis true, but i do not think anybody want the government to shut down, no matter your political party.
And I do not want a big government to hold my hand, and watch over my every move, I do not want the republicans to sell everything to their buddies in big oil, I do not want late term abortions to be legal. I think schooll vouchers are a good thing. I shall never understand why so many candidates claim to be for public schools, and then turn 'round and send their children to pricey private schools, and oppose voucher programs.
That is something that i have wondered, why after all the times Nader has run for the Oval Office, he, or any other third=party candidate has yet to get 5% of the vote! You would think with so many who are apparently discontented with the Republicans and the Democrats, that Gore and Bush should get so many votes, popular and electoral.
theuglytruth is discussing (poorly) voting for the Libertarian candidate, so you attack “libertarians” by pointing to some fringe group that claims it has “libertarians” among them. I bet some of those members vote Democratic and Republican. That’s why Democrats and Republicans scare me. I’m not an apologist for the Libertarian Party, but I’ve seen this argument enough that I think it’s worth discussing.
The term “libertarian” is bandied about by a lot of people and refers to both a philosophy and a political party. The term, in reference to the philosophy, is often defined out of existence. I heard the lead singer of Chumbawumba say she was libertarian even though she wants to essentially end private ownership of goods. But since this is a thread about political parties, stick to a critique of the party instead of citing obscure child-rearing tracts.
If your cite is what scares you about Libertarians, then you shouldn’t be afraid. If Libertarians “scare” you for another reason, that’s fine, but try citing something about the party that scares you.
Don’t sweat it, anya marie. I’m sure most of the posters here are smart enough to realize this schmuck doesn’t speak for the whole Libertarian party any more than I speak for the whole Donner Party.
I alluded to that in an earlier post by saying, “. . . you top it off by stating that the Libertarian dream is that the country be thrown into chaos as the Federal govt collapses? How many other Libertarians do you think would agree with that sentiment?”
And Zoff, not that you have to do this or anything, but if that site is a poor represntation of Libertarians, could you post a site that more accurately explains what they stand for? I’m unclear about the whole Libertarian philosophy and party. I’m ignorant in this area, how about helping me fight it? 
I guess the best place would be either the Libertarian Party homepage at http://www.lp.org or http://www.HarryBrowne2000.org which is the website of the presidential candidate.
And to expand upon my earlier rant about this issue, the issue isn’t whether somebody supports a party or not. It’s that it still seems acceptable to find some nutcase who claims to be a libertarian or green or socialist or whatever and hold that person out as a strawman. I’m sure you can find plenty of fringe idiots who vote either Republican or Democrat yet nobody would hold these people out as representative of the party.
I generally avoid the Pit because I have no desire to go after anybody or try to out-insult people, but the mention of this issue got me going. I also don’t mean to attack Guinastasia, since I don’t know her from Adam. I don’t claim to know whether she feels her linked website represents libertarianism or not, so I don’t want to sound like I am attacking.
I have now added so many caveats to my post that I am puking pablum. I just needed to vent on my little tangent. I am at peace.
