The amazing thing about this show is that it’s a whole lot more entertaining than it should be. If you look at any of the individual elements of the show they’re pretty formulaic and bland.
My favorite episode is probably the one where Dog River is looking for a new doctor, just because the four separate plots just come together so horribly in the end.
We noticed that some older generation Saskatchewanians didn’t find it particularly funny - I told my husband that was because they thought it was a documentary.
I loved the show - it had a humour that would sort of sneak up on you (then mug you for your lunch money). Brent Butt is about the same age as I am, and I was born and raised in SK - I swear to God I went to school (and later on partied) with people exactly like him.
My favourite episode was the one with the Kiefer Sutherland cameo, who happened to be staying at his mom’s house.
I was looking for a clip from Corner Gas the other day to give an example of my accent, and then spent a bunch of time watching the show because it was so damned funny.
My vote has to go to the ‘Big Dirty Ho’ episode, in part because just as it came out my friend sold 'What were they thinking?" to CTV travel (in case you’re wondering, its a show where they go around and look at big dirty hos, hockey sticks, trucks, etc and ask the locals what they were thinking when they bought it.)
I’m a bit bummed that Dan for Mayor and Hiccups aren’t funnier. Dan for Mayor is ok, mostly because of Fred Ewanuick, but Hiccups is unwatchable for me.
Funny, I’m the exact opposite. I like Hiccups better than Dan for Mayor. But I agree that neither one comes close to matching Corner Gas.
There are so many good episodes that it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I really like the one with Hank and Oscar competing on the imaginary stock market. The scene where Oscar is borrowing more imaginary money from Brent is gold.
So far I really laughed at Smell of Freedom when Davis regains his sense of smell. His reaction to Pelly’s perfume had me laughing for awhile.
The parents Elvis Wedding secret was cute.
I was hoping that they’d continue the Brent / Lacey flirting from season 1. They almost kissed once. But it looks like they decided against that story. It would be a little weird since Brent and Nancy Robertson (Wanda) are married in real life.
Do most Canadian comedys skip the laugh track? I’m amazed how quiet it is with no audience clapping or a laugh track. Makes a nice change.
I can’t think of any recent Canadian sitcoms that were filmed in front of a studio audience, but I don’t watch that many Canadian sitcoms to begin with.
