The funniest show Canada has ever produced, Corner Gas, is coming to the United States via Superstation WGN. I have no idea what that channel is, or if many of you will have it, but if you run across “Corner Gas” as you’re flipping through the channels some evening this fall, give it a go. Every single Canadian alive thinks it is the funniest thing that has ever been created in the history of the world.*
*May be slight hyperbole.
If it’s half as funny as The Red Green Show , I am so there!
Whatever happened to ol’ Red anyway?
Just for the record, not all Canadians think Corner Gas is funny.
It is typical Canadian humour - broad, predictable and unsophisticated.
Consider yourselves warned!
I’d say it’s a Prairie thing, but my father in Kingston loves it, so maybe it’s an old person thing.
I’m a relatively young urbanite and I like it. It’s a perfect combination of Northern Exposure and Scrubs but without the pretentiousness and devil-worship.
Yay!!
I love that show and it’ll be nice to have a little bit of home I can watch on TV here. Now, if we could just get some Rick Mercer…
The show’s still on here, but I don’t know if they’re new or repeats.
I liked the deadpan-ness in the Saskatchewan is so flat clip. If I don’t forget by September 17, I’ll be watching.
Deadpan could be considered a trademark of prairie humour. Part of what makes the show so funny for me is that I grew up in Saskatchewan, and I was friends with people exactly like Brent Butt.
I don’t think Rick Mercer’s cameo-ed on “Corner Gas” yet - probably a network conflict thing. They can get the Prime Minister of Canada, but not Rick Mercer.
As far as Canadian shows go, I’ll take Kids in the Hall and most of SCTV over Corner Gas, although there’s no disputing Corner Gas does have some great moments. The episode where they riffed on The Littlest Hobo was priceless.
The best ever Canadian TV, though, was The Trouble with Tracy. Hilariously bad. Wikipedia has a good take on it.
How anyone could watch Red Green is beyond me.
I’m waiting for the inevitable thread ‘Are Saskatchewanians really like this?’ and I can say, without a doubt, yes.
I like “Corner Gas”, but the all-time funniest Canadian show is still “Trailer Park Boys”, with “Kids in the Hall” running a close second.
We find that our parents and grandparents from SK don’t think it’s very funny, and our response to them is that it isn’t supposed to be a documentary.
I find it amusing when Canadians talk of all these shows that us poor Americans don’t get…except those of us who live close to the boarder. I have gotten CBC, French CBC, and CTV my whole life.
(Not that I watched a lot of it…but I recognize the names, at least. )
I love Corner Gas to pieces, but one piece of advice I have for anyone thinking of trying it out is to make sure you watch from the beginning of an episode. Coming in in the middle of one usually sucks.
Red retired, though it’s in reruns on some channels. Looking it up on wikipedia, it ran for 15 seasons! (1991-2006)
I like Corner Gas, but I always seem to forget when it’s on or have other things happening. I should get the dvds and watch.
featherlou, I love you for letting me know. A round on me next time I’m home!
Edit: I CAN’T GET IT HERE. Fie!
Aw, Ginger, that’s too bad. And you a Westerner, too. Are you still a Westerner? You’re living pretty east these days.
My favorite ‘kids in the hall’ skit ever was when a guy was put on trial for eating his fellow passengers on a plane.
"Until you’re in that situation where you have to chose between living or dying, you don’t have a right to judge me.’’
Attorney: “You were delayed for 20 minutes! And then you took a single bite out of everyone.”
I’ll have to think… does the Wild Rose tattoo count?
(No, I don’t have one. Yet.)
Just beautiful. They really had a thing about chewing and eating. Remember the skit where the boss is such a bastard he makes his employees chew his food for him and then spit it into a baggy so he can swallow it later? Great humor, though not to everyone’s taste, I understand…
