So I'm sitting at the bar...

So I’m sitting at the bar, waiting for some friends to show up, and the guy next to me starts a conversation with me. Now, it just so happened that he was deaf, but could speak and could read lips, so we talked for a while about sports, work and what not. I also asked him about Gallaudet and “deaf culture” and it was a fairly interesting and informative conversation, seeing as I have never had any close friends in my life who were deaf.

A while later that evening, I was thinking about the conversation and what it would be like to be deaf, and it occured to me, do deaf people think that farts are funny?

Of course… as far as I know being deaf doesn’t affect one’s sense of smell or sense of humour.

I was once standing at the subway station and was approached by a very large drunk guy. He started talking to me and was making rude comments towards a group of asian teens suggesting that WE go beat them up. I ignored him for as long as I could but when he persisted I looked at him and said in a muffled voice “I’m sorry… I am deaf… I can’t understand you” with the accompanying sign language. He snorted and walked off. A couple who witnessed this were looking at me funny so I told them I wasn’t really deaf and that the guy was simply being an asshole. We laughed and laughed and laughed.

I would wager to say that they might find their own farts funny. But having a real stinker sneak up on you with no fair warning…

I’ll wait for handy’s opinion.

Yeah, but only the sound of a fart is actually funny, not the smell.
Unless it’s your own fart that is, then the smell is funny too.
