So is Ketanji Brown Jackson getting on the Supreme Court or not?

the answer to the question is yes. barring some horrific cataclysm. 53-47.

As the three of them had previously announced their intentions to do so, Romney, Murkowski, and Collins all voted to confirm, along with all 50 Democratic senators.

What’s amazing is that just 28 years later, they were the zenith of statesmanlike sanity as compared to today’s QOP.

Of course Rand Paul had to make himself the center of attention by casting his vote some time after the mere mortals did.

While I’m glad to see Jackson confirmed, this whole sorry process has left me convinced more than ever that if Republicans take the Senate next year, they will not confirm any Biden nominee to a Supreme Court vacancy. Absolutely not if it’s one of the conservative justices that shuffles off. Mitch will either never bring the nominee to the floor or (if he has a big enough majority that he doesn’t need to worry about Collins/Murkowski/Romney) vote him/her down.

That’s been clear since 2016, IMO. No more SCOTUS justices getting confirmed (or likely even considered) except when Prez and Senate are the same party.

I’m sure their compatriots in the Republican party will be up in arms about McConnell effectively changing the number of SCOTUS seats.

Anyway, back to the happy news, the NY Times is showing the news as a rare large font, all caps headline!

I’m not sure that’s clear. It’s clear the republicans won’t approve a justice, but it’s possible the democrats will approve a justice under a republican president, because the democrats usually still try to play by the rules and act in good faith no matter how much the republicans will not. Which, at this point, is a strategic blunder because it hands more and more of the government over to the rule breakers.

I agree with this logic. Ultimately, it may come down to the next Supreme Court opening and the factors in play. If the Republicans do gain a senate majority, and then Clarence Thomas drops dead in February 2023, I fully expect that McConnell would not even allow a hearing. The Republicans could theoretically vote down a nomination; if that occurred, Biden should keep nominating people to the seat. The Republicans would have to approve one eventually; if they keep voting them down, it would be obvious that it is nakedly partisan.

If the above scenario occurs, a situation where a Republican president faces a Democratic Senate would, on a matter of principle alone, have to see the same result. In a weird way, I kind of want this to happen, if anything but to rip off the band-aid on the idea that the Supreme Court is above partisan politics. Everything is partisan in this country and we need to stop deluding ourselves about it.

It’s obvious that all of their behavior has been nakedly partisan for years. Their base likes this, they think they’re fighting the good fight against the pure evil democrats. I don’t see how you think they will be forced to eventually act in good faith and do the right thing - when has that happened in the last few years?

Yeah, McConnell can’t afford a fair vote, as several Republicans might cross over. It happened this time.

Sigh…When will Democrats finally learn that nearly everything is guaranteed?

We see this same routine repeating over and over again: “Will Biden win in 2020?” (of course.) “Will Ketanji get confirmed to SCOTUS?” (of course.) The hand-wringing is as predictable as a cuckoo clock, and almost as annoying.

It is time for Democrats to learn to sit back, relax, toss back some whiskey, and take victory for granted 99% of the time.

Trust me, your life is much less stressful once you do so.

What are you talking about?

I think he is being sarcastic.

I can’t tell.

Unlikely.

I did not mean for this to change Republicans behavior; I fully agree that this has already been a partisan thing for years and that the Republican base wants them to pursue this. If anything, I just want them to display what they are willing to do to the Dems and what Independents there are. The Republican base is only probably 40-45% of the electorate; everybody else has the ability to change the direction this is headed in, but they need a bucket of cold water thrown on them to see what is plainly obvious.

I would like to take a moment to congratulate Justice Jackson on her historic achievement, and also to congratulate President Biden on pushing this nomination through the mountains and mountains of bullshit that the GOP dumped all over Washington, DC in an effort to prevent it.

It’s useful to breathe a moment and savor these big victories, as they come so rarely these days.

I think he’s being sincere, in the sense that he sincerely wants Democrats to sabotage themselves in that way.

The problem is that while the Democrats are saying its the Republicans fault for refusing to consider even a single nominee. The Republicans are going to say its the Democrats fault for nominating no one but anti white racist communist pedophiles. And those so called independents will lie back and smugly claim that both sides are equally to blame.
