So is threadshitting now acceptable?

n.b.: You can’t tell mods to shut the fuck up, here, or in the Pit, or anywhere.

OMG this board removed the all caps on that post. It’s clearly discriminating against me praising an undead American.

I think diosabellissima’s post was threadshitting. I’ll leave it at that until a pit thread is started.

I think Cherry’s moderation was wrong and sexist. I cut her some slack right after the switch-over but I think the shakedown period is over. That moderation felt like a line drawn in the sand. Moderation such as that only further empowers the feminist vigilantes. The balance has swung to far to the other side, imo.

Missed the edit: “too”

:smack:

Ellen clearly indicated that her reason for her moderation was her own personal belief that the jokes were in bad taste, rather than based on any rules of the message board. Her own personal beliefs should have absolutely nothing to do with how she moderates.

The definition of threadshitting is a post denigrating the topic of the thread and belittling the people posting in it. That is what Diosa did. She made fun of the posters in the thread, not just the content. It should not matter that Ellen agreed with Diosa’s characterizations.

And I supported the new anti-misogyny rules, so it has nothing to do with that. The rules specifically state that sexual jokes are okay if the thread itself is lighthearted and about sexuality. If Ellen wants to argue against that, she should not be able to do it as a moderator.

Diosa made a sexually crude joke specifically denigrating other people on this messageboard. Even in a thread where sexual jokes are allowed, that is still in violation of the new rules.

Also, telling someone that you think they are threadshitting happens on this board all the time, and is not junior moderating. Ellen only claimed it was because she was letting her personal views on the subject interfere with her moderating.

take notice: this is not an accurate statement.

I know that mods will not openly disagree with each other on these matters (that’s cool) but it would nice to have some sort of ruling on this. Accusations of threadshitting are common as dirt around here. I think VT was unfairly called out on this. I agree with BigT (I know, right? ;)) that Ellen’s feeling on the misogyny colored her moderation in this instance.

Wrong. I made a joke about any guys who were blowing their load in their shorts over an innocuous photo of a chick’s lower torso in a bikini on a billboard. Did you blow your load while looking at said innocuous picture? Did any of the posters? If not, I wasn’t insulting you.

And wait, am I guilty of threadshitting or insulting? Which is it?

I found this specific part from FinnAgain to be interesting:

It’s been awhile since I read the registration agreement, but I’m pretty sure that this board is open to all genders, not just men. There wasn’t even an indication of the thread being intended for a specific subsection of posters (like “Best.Billboard.Ever (men, you’ll see what I mean!)”).

And not only that, but I counted five women participating in that thread* before Diosa posted. Additionally, I noticed that two other posters disagreed with the OP (much more lightheartedly, to be sure).

It wasn’t a by-invitation men-only thread, and it’s interesting that you described it as you did.

  • Five I know are women, at least. There are some posters in that thread whose gender I’m not aware of.

I agree with all this, but would say the posts came across the most as useless chastising. Heaven forfend if anyone sees a certain picture as their ideal of anyone. And the other posters who “disagreed” with the OP formed their opinions in such a manner as to still be conducive to having a discussion. Diosa was basically leveling an accusation of prurience to, I suppose, any guys reading the thread. The whole exercise to show her disgust at something she perceived (when facts weren’t necessarily in attendance) was completely pointless. In my opinion.

Note Well: You are not the boss of me (or anyone else).

You are, however, completely wrong. If I and Marley were engaged in a heated dispute in the Pit over the relative merits of certain breakfast cereals, there would be nothing actionable about my telling him to “shut the fuck up about Crunchberries!”

You’re really not very good at this.

What discussion is there to have? Once you’ve done a tally of who thinks it’s a fine ass vs an ok ass, what else is there to say? It was a grainy photo of a random woman. Far better photos from both an artistic and resolution perspective can be found with a vague attempt at googling. I think the thread is a baldfaced admittance of not only prurience but low-bar prurience which is almost worse.

And it is not a photo of an attractive woman, it’s a photo of an attractive ass, unless you really want to claim that the only thing that has bearing on attractiveness is the butt.

Yeah, who cares. If it were a picture of Idris Alba’s chest or arms, I may have been drooling a little too. Jesus fuck.

It doesn’t have to make sense to you or I, if they want to discuss it without someone shitting on their conversation they should have that right. That’s why there are rules against threadshitting. That discussion was no more or less relevant than a thousand other geek threads that have taken place here over the years. And lord knows let someone poop on anything in those threads the cry goes up instantly… and the mods will step in and quash it.

Just because there is no conversation to be had in your opinion doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be allowed to have it.

Again: if I started a thread titled “BEST.BOOK.EVER.” and my OP was my praising Twilight, do you honestly think that thread would go uncontested? Snark free? Type it with a straight face.

So if a cop pulls me over for speeding, a good strategy for explaining it away is ‘everybody else does it’?

If DiosaBellissima’s contributions to that thread weren’t a threadshit then I don’t know what a threadshit is any more. Neither apparently does Ellen.

Largely because you’re ignoring context. I didn’t say women could not or did not post to the thread. But rather obviously, going into the thread where men are appreciating an attractive woman, solely to accuse the posters of fapping to it? Yeah, that’s butting in. And being a Jerk. And threadshitting.

Sorry, did you have an Exclusionary Males bit ready to go?

Sure looks like you were suggesting that the people who were enjoying it were getting off to it. Thanks for the reminder, as that’s also against the new ‘anti misogyny’ rules.
