So, is Willow any good?

Willow was one of my favorite movies when I was young. Saw it for the first time when I was 7 and have seen it many times since. I haven’t watched it since I was about 12 though – just never bothered really.

Now there’s a special edition DVD of it and I’m sorely tempted to rent it.
BUT…

I’m worried that it’ll have aged like so many things that were cool when I was a kid. The 60’s Batman cartoon, Archie comics, Superman 3 and 4… all these things that I have viewed years later were well, crap.

And I don’t want to do the same thing to Willow. Is it something I can watch again? Or will I be ruining yet another memory from childhood? (sniff…)

She was before they made her a lesbian. LORFOLORORFL!

Seriously, tho…

Nobody here can tell you if you’ll like Willow these days. Best thing to do it rent it. If you don’t like it, well, you’re out five bucks or so but emerge sadder and wiser. If you do like it, you can buy it, and you’re still out five bucks, but what’s that when you have a DVD you’ll enjoy many times?

It really depends.I’ve seen it a thousand times since that very first time I persuaded my dad to take me and my sister to go see it in the movie theatre. I love sci-fi/fantasy stuff and it only gets better. Haven’t seen the special edition yet but will put it on my list of stuff to rent from Netflix.com.

I bought it for myself last Christmas, and still enjoyed it. Not as much, granted, but it’s a good flick.

I watched it as an adult when it came out in the theaters and loved it then. I still love it now. Not the same situation as you are in, but it’s worth it, IMHO. Good acting, and not entirely a story driven by the special effects. IIRC, it was the first film to use the newest computer morphing graphics(the scene where Willow is trying to transform Fin Razael back into human form, and finally gets it right)

Yeah its still pretty good.

Yeah its still pretty good.

There aren’t a whole lot of good fantasy movies, so I think it’s worth it for that reason alone. (Plus it’s not like it’s irreedeemably dated or anything.) It’s not LOTR, but it’s still a decent flick.

I’ve been buying movies from my youth lately. I find that they don’t inspire quite the wonder they did years ago. However, my daughter enjoys them (she’s five.) She absolutely loves The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth for instance.

So, if you have kids or plan to, they’ll probably enjoy it. You’ll have new happy memories if it, even if it isn’t quite what you remembered.

If you’re just renting it, then what’s the problem? Rent it, plus another movie you know will be good (or at least enjoyable) and make it a night. That way if it sucks, you won’t really care. But yeah, you shouldn’t have too many concerns about renting a movie. Paying $30 for one, yeah…

I still like the movie a lot, and apparently so do a lot of other people. I admit I didn’t really care for Labyrinth when I saw it as an “adult,” but the Dark Crystal is still marvelous in my opinion. I think Willow’s a great movie, and definitely worth the $3.50-whatever they charge to rent wherever you are. So go for it, and enjoy.

Who pays $30 for a single DVD? Y’all need to do some comparison online shopping. I can get it for 20 bucks easy.

Anyway, Willow’s an okay movie, but I don’t think I’d buy it. Worth a rental though.

Joanne Whalley will always be pretty hot in that movie.

Yay! It’s still good. The commentary’s pretty good too. And he makes a joke about Buffy :).

I had no idea that Warwick Davis was only 17 when he made Willow.
