Yay again for Miriam and Elizabeth! I wanna hold 'em so bad they’re so cute! Also, TomKitten will need some lessons on how to be a proper older brother. Gnat has had practice.

You know, the couple holding the babies are our extremely blond and blue-eyed friends- we’re both pretty dark, although I’m Asian-looking and Mr. Lissar isn’t. There’s a picture of him farther down the blog. Okay, you can’t see very much of him.
That is my dad, but he was born here, so our family hasn’t retained a lot of Japanese traditions, although we gave all our kids but Elizabeth Japanese family middle names.

The “finding out it’s twins” took place a bit later than the “finding out I’m pregnant” - you’re doing like people who count heads and forget their own

KinkyNipponTourist, I’ve never met a pair of twins who didn’t know who was the eldest. French, Spanish or Irish, it was a Known Fact and it led to conversations along the lines of “WHY must I do what YOU say?” “Because I’m older!” “:rolleyes:By five minutes :p” When my nephew discovered twins, one of his first questions was “but… how do they come out at the same time?” “They don’t, one comes out and then the other” “Oooh. So if you’re a twin you can still be the eldest!”
He’s very conscious of his Eldest status, albeit not a twin.

It’s true that twins always know who’s first. But in the case of my sisters, because they were so identical, it’s been assumed that they were probably mixed up at some point, so we don’t know if the one we call Julie (the oldest) is really Julie or Joan.

They’re identical, but one is about a pound bigger, so they’re not too hard to tell apart.
When we found out it was twins we started screaming for help. My parents live close and have done huge amounts of work, my aunt is flying in at the end of February, and Mr. Lissar’s mother and step-mom have both come in and are coming back for stretches.
Four kids under five years. We’re just trying to keep everyone dressed and fed for the next year. That’s our big goal.

We have identical twin grandsons born October 8, and we thought we could tell them apart for the same reason, but at this point, roles have been reversed. When they’re asleep, I can’t tell them apart. When they’re awake, their temperaments are so different that it’s easy to tell who’s who.
Good luck, I feel for you. Try to get rest when you can. Accept people’s offers of help.

When I was a child I thought twins were always more attractive than other people because I’d never seen an ugly pair of twins. Since those days I’ve seen enough twins to know they come in less attractive packaging too, but these two live up to my childhood misconception

Thanks for your reply, Nava. I agree, most if not all twins do know who arrived first. And in Japanese, at least, the elder twin is always referred to as ‘older brother/sister’ since names in the family are always oriented to the perspective of the youngest child. Does Spanish refer to whoever is older as ‘older brother/sister’ as well?
The long/short of it is, there isn’t really a word for ‘brother’ in Japanese; it’s either “younger brother” or “older brother.”
IOW, Miriam or Elizabeth has 2 older brothers and an older sister, and the other cutie bear has 2 older brothers and a younger sister.
Right then, I’ll shut up now.
