So, SDMBers mostly identify as ----?

White, American, Californian, atheist, socialist – the Irish and Dutch halves of my heritage only come up in certain contexts.

White male Canadian, with both maternal and paternal lines going back at least a few (3+) generations. Genetic mix is Pan-european mutt[sup]*[/sup] with about 1/16th Cree(?) Nation mixed in for good measure.

[sup]*[/sup]Mostly British Isles [maternal side moderately identifies as Scots (Clan MacDonald of Skye)] , with German and Ukrainian tossed in.

I’m a lightly- toasted American.

Only about 75% of my ancestors came from Europe. Those are mostly Slovak, English, Scottish. I’ll be damned what happened to that other 25%. My mother had it but then I guess she misplaced it one cold february night.

Nope, that’s perfect.

Damn, I forgot there were Dutch posters on this board. You caught me. That is not a Dutch word!

The correct word would be “onhandig”, or “onbeholpen”, or “knullig” or (my favourite) “sukkelig”.

American born. White of almost purely German ancestry.

Hey, I like onneuzel. I’ve used it already. Always room for new words.

Identify as Italian, whereas in fact I am also tall, German, Russian, Polish and Swedish.

I have citizenship with none of those countries and my spoken english is likewise not identifiable to any country. Even where I live, people often ask my nationality.

My non-English languages are rusty as I don’t use any much and speak a patois of English and Italian at home, Venetian dialect at that. Sometimes.

I’m (mostly) a Kiwi Pakeha. That basicaly means I’m a white/Caucasian NZer.

I love the word Pakeha, though there are some Kiwis who don’t. Pakeha is a funny word…a word that has evolved, much like the word “gay”,it has 1000’s of speculated origins and meanings but generaly just means white Kiwi now.

I’m glad I’m a Pakeha, it sounds like I belong here. I would hate to describe myself as “mostly white”.

Pakeha…I love it! I am officially now a Pakeha.

White is so boring. But Pakeha sounds like you have some Pokemon Powers!!!111!!

“I summons Pakeha to duel YOU!”
sorry, I’m surrounded by Pokemon stuff…

In other venues, Pakeha would make an awesome liscense plate name.
Is it pronounced: Pah-key-ah or Pak-ee-ah?

It is a very groovy word. It makes white sound so very special  I always describe myself as first Kiwi and second Pakeha.

Maori is a very easy language to pronounce, entirely phonetical… Pa-ke-ha.

Alas it doesn’t have any Pokemon powers but it does make you sound ever so exotic if you ain’t in NZ.

I insist you get liscense plate. Imagine how many questions you would get at the supermarket carpark or school drop off!
(Don’t listen to those who say it once meant things like " white rat/pig" or “bugger off”…it is an official catergory on govt forms! The forms usually say Pakeha/European NZer/Caucasian, or some combination of those.)

No, the correct word would be “onnozel”. You were close, just had a small spelling error there.

“stumperd”, a noun, is also a nice word.

two of my favorite Dutch words are insects: “libelle” (dragonfly) en “vlinder” (butterfly) - pronounced properly* they are some of the most elegant words I know in the language. At least, to me.

  • ‘li’ as in a short form of ‘Lee’, ‘belle’ as in a quickly pronounced (Patti La)Belle, and vlinder actually pretty much as it’s written

White American. I generally identify myself as being of Dutch heritage despite it representing only slightly over 1/4 of my genetic makeup because:[ul]
[li]my last name is Dutch[/li][li]the Dutch ancestry is fairly recent and well-documented and mostly comes in one “chunk”, so to speak[/li][li]it comes via relatives I love and am happy to be associated with, (Qadgop and his dad)[/li][li]it’s the only part of my ethnic background whose culture I really had any exposure to growing up[/li][li]I spent some of my time as a child living in an area where many people have significant Dutch ancestry, and I think the locally popular “If you’re not Dutch, then you’re not much” bumper sticker affected me subliminally[/li][li]the Dutch are just generally neato[/li][/ul]

Do us a favour, elfbabe, and ask your Dutch mates why Dutch footballers can never get on with one another and/or the coach. Here’s a country that should ahve won at least 2 World Cups and 2 more European Championships than the miserable one it managed in 1988, when the players stuck it in the net rather than in one another.

A second question for your Dutch emigree friends: does the Dutch football team represent a microcosm of the Dutch people?

Australian, of mostly Irish and Scots descent.

Sorry, Rog, but people around here left the Netherlands a loooong time ago, so they could practice their strict Calvinism in peace without being disturbed by all that damn tolerance. You’ll have to ask an actual Clogland-dweller those things.

Well, we have plenty of those, so no doubt someone will chip in.

I self identify as human, although there is allowance for some debate on that count. If pressed I’ll allow as I’m a born native of California and hence American (which in this case means from the United States of), but would probably say I’m more Floridian (with all the attendant shame that confers) at this point.

Do you imply that:

  1. You have to be born in California to be human ? :frowning:

or

  1. Those not born in California are not human ?

You misunderstand. I was implying that my own humanity was debatable. Californians are not particularly special. Alaskans are much more unique.
