If you think it would be helpful for you to go to the individuals who were fed up with the mistreatment, trauma, and outright murder of their family, friends, and neighbors, and to tell them that they are expressing their reaction to their marginalization and oppression wrong, then go ahead.
Otherwise, I have no idea who it is that you think that you are criticizing.
And the money quote (quite literally!) from ZipperJJ’s linked article above:
On Monday, The Washington Post reported that the RNC had decided to move a portion of its April retreat to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Trump will speak and the committee will pay him and his resort for the event.
So I guess this is how they are trying to mollify him after the hissy fit about his name being used in fundraising appeals. I guess there will be no limit to the ass kissing at all …
That type of self-serving arrangement had become somewhat standard the Trump era, with his properties collecting some $10.5 million from various political and campaign funds. But now, it seems increasingly clear he wants the money flowing directly to him ― and not to the party.
This bullshit may not end until every competitive 2022 congressional race is won by a Democrat who follows the Biden model – essentially does nothing but campaign as the not-Trump candidate. Only then will the GOP start the grow the cojones it needs to kiss off DJT and say to fuck with his followers.
Naw… I’m totally OK with the Republican party having a complete melt-down and dissolution. I’ve been opposed to them since 1980. Good riddance to the GOP, I see no reason to save a political party that has become a cult of personality.
Our scenarios aren’t in disagreement. In mine, when the GOP finally tells Trump and his followers to fuck off, the ensuing schism cripples both the party and the MAGAts for a generation – plenty of time for the good guys to set things right.
But, you are saying that you went out to the protestors and told them that they were protesting wrong? I have to admit that I’m a bit curious as to how that went over.
You are making some sort of nebulous argument that I am wrong, but you haven’t articulated what about.
Can you tell me what exactly it is that I have claimed that you think that I am wrong on?
It is entirely a bad faith argument to tie the term “Defund the police” to anyone who hasn’t used it. That’s the only claim that I have made here, and you have made absolutely nothing to contradict it.
Anyway, this is the typical attempt at distraction. Complain about how someone protests, that way, you don’t have to pay any attention to what it is that they are protesting.
Yep. We saw the same thing in the 1960’s civil rights era, when many folks were of the opinion that “them n#$&^ and n%^&-lovers should just write letters to the editor, or complain politely, instead of doing these terrible protests and marches. They get what they deserve then right?”
It’s been going on like this forever. Complain about the method of protest, and ignore the reasons behind the protest. See also Colin Kaepernick for another modern example.
I’m not American so I don’t know how the party system works well enough to understand something: Who declares DJT as a big shot in the party… couldn’t they just kick him out if they wanted? Why would they want to keep such an idiot who loses most of the time in such a position?
If the answer is because he’s popular and got 70 million votes, well, unless those 70 million are people who never voted before he came along then those same people have been voting for someone not-DJT all along. And they would presumably continue voting for someone else if DJT were given the boot.
A given percentage of them might continue to follow Trump if he went out as an independent, but I think paying for everything himself combined with his age and losing track record would prevent him from doing so for more than a couple years at most.
They’ll keep him for the same reason they begrudgly took him in - he’s captured the hearts and support of a significant percentage of the people they rely upon to win elections. They can’t afford to drive his supporters away - they’d never win another election again.
And the people who vote for him don’t see any problem with his track record and never will, because the information they choose to expose themselves to is carefully curated to pretend he’s not a loser.
Now if he dies that’ll change the equation, but nothing short of that will - he’d amply demonstrated that going senile and losing his mind won’t diminish support for him one whit. Even if he was catatonic most of his followers would probably claim he was biding his time or some such nonsense like that.
Our parties are not ideologically consistent and closed to active members only. Any idjit could (and did!) declare themselves a candidate for President and appeal directly to the party’s voters instead of winning a seat in Parliament and then gaining the support of his party’s MPs.
At some point in time the parties may be forced to re-think the structure of their primary systems if not the very usefulness of them at all.
Damn, I’ve had a field day up on my election reform soapbox.
This may sound unrelated but stick with me for a moment here. Have you ever heard of the performance artist known as Young Dirty Bastard? After ODB passed on, his son decided to take up the mantle and put out some songs that are very much in the ODB tradition. Problem is, they suck. He’s copying everything his dad did. The randomness, the crazy lyrics, the weird speech patterns, it’s all there. But what isn’t there is whatever it was that made ODB “a son unique”. He was called that because there was no father to his style. Turns out there is no son to it either. It just sounds like a hollow copy with an inherently lesser quality. And so it goes with Don Jr. as well. However one wishes to define Trump’s appeal to 70 million or so voters, he did not pass those characteristics on to his children.
The things that glued the MAGAts to him were mostly his brash forth-charging and lack of filters. He has a sort of billymaysian impositional demeanor that captures the hearts of QVCites in ways that Jr or Eric or Javanka just cannot reproduce. I doubt that the kids can master the neener-neener-I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I style of whatever you call what he was doing.
In short, CFEFWSG was just fucked up in exactly the convergent manner that made him wholly unfit for the office and highly attractive to his horde.
Eric and Don Jr are basically the Crabbe and Goyle to Don Sr.'s Malfoy. They provide backup hurr-hurrs when required but are unable to accomplish anything of value on their own.
