So, we're abolishing stockings this Christmas

I will miss them. There were so many goodies crammed into every square inch. My biggest concern is how I’m supposed to get deodorant now.

Why are you abolishing stockings?

My family sees it as a burden now. Hopefully they will continue to at least hang them up, as they make nice decorations. Also, there was a noticeable shift from fun, kooky stocking stuffers to items of necessity (i.e. deodorant, toothbrushes, lotion, small concealable handguns, chapstick, soap, etc.).

I still enjoyed it, though. It’s tradition, FFS.

Then let them know you like them. I still hang up mine and I am over 50.

My mom did the same thing a few years ago (when us kids were, er…like 24 and 26) and I had the exact same thought. Whence deoderant?

Good luck. Don’t forget to pick up a new toothbrush, too.

My parents are firm believers in the idea that you are never too old for a stocking. Admittedly, they usually don’t have a lot of fun, kooky stuff in them, but the traditional neccessities are given to all who are present, and often given even to people who aren’t together on Christmas Day.

(Traditional neccessities as I see them: Socks, soap, lotion, candy, raisins, an orange, and it seems like there’s something else I’m forgetting.)

You can have my stocking when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

My mother usually takes the responsibility for stocking filling in our family, and in addition to the staples listed by Eureka, there’s usually neat kitschy stuff like those teeny-tiny hardcover books of quotes, toys for our pets, novelty pens/pencils and so on.

My husband doesn’t get the fun of stockings, so my sister and I do them for each other. I’d be totally bummed not to get one!

I still put at least some Chocolate Santas and a toothbrush in hubs’s though. Gotta have SOMETHING to stuff it with!

My family never did the Christmas stocking thing, but my husbands did. So with our five year old we are trying to do it. I forgot to hang them one year. I forgot to fill them another year. I hope to get it right this year.

My son, isn’t all that excited by his stocking yet, but it is no wonder, since I have been so bad at adopting the tradition.
I wish my husband would just take over the stocking duty, since he wants to do it, but he just hangs them and leaves the rest up to me.

I miss having a stocking. :frowning: My family quits 'em when you’re grown. I sit there all jealous while my little sister and niece open stockings full of candy, nail polish, lipgloss, and little pretties, and the nephews open stockings full of candy and Hot Wheels and such. I’m 42 years old, dammit, I shouldn’t be jealous of kids.

My husband doesn’t get the fun of stockings, so my sister & I do them for each other. I still put some chocolate Santas & a couple toothbrushes in his, though!

Wouldn’t it be more fun and save everyone a little money to go the other way? Just do stockings and skip the “big” present.

I could never give up stockings! I am sad that I no longer get one, but my husband never did “get it”.

I am not judging you all, but I am glad I have never gotten or given deodorant in any stocking. The closest to utilitarian I’m getting is an ice scraper for my son’s car.
I also have never given underwear or socks (unless fun socks) for presents.

We have cut drastically down on gifts this year. Instead of 3 per kid, they will each get one. I did most of my stocking shopping at coolstuff
And this year, I’m paying cash for everything, except this one LEGO kit #2 son wants. It feels good.

OMG, I LOVE American Science & Surplus! I had no idea they had a website. I wanted to run over to the store this weekend, but didn’t know if I would have time. Thank you, Eleanor!

My sisters and I pretty much do this. Since I am a jewelry ho, as are my two sisters, we often put a “real” present in the stocking, which, at this point, isn’t even a stocking – it’s a gift bag. We live far apart, so there is no hanging of stockings. But choosing the gift bag is part of the fun, too.

I don’t think you’re ever too old for a stocking at Christmas. I still fill a stocking for my wife, and we even have a stocking for the cats. I just have to make sure that my wife doesn’t get the kitty treats, the catnip toys and suchlike; and the cats don’t get the pocket novel, a knick-knack of some sort, candy, and an orange.

Lots of cool stuff this year, too! and cheap, cheap, cheap! Thank goodness my kids like cheesy toys and quirky stuff.

They can have my stocking when they pry it from my cold, dead toes.

This is what my family does. We each fill stockings for each other. So I spend my November and December buying five slightly different versions of various little things (chocolate, drugstore stuff, cooking accessories, airplane booze bottles, etc - my mom still can’t resist getting socks and deodorant for everyone). On Christmas Eve we have some logistical difficulties (since we’re sharing the Santa duties but don’t want to make anyone stuff their own stocking) but overall it works out great.

I like it especially because I was really poor when we started doing this (so I had to buy the cheap end of everything), but I never felt like I wasn’t contributing my share. Now I get to buy luxury stuff (but inexpensive in the grand scheme of things), like fancy fair trade chocolates or overdesigned kitchen utensils, which are just as fun for me, and as appreciated by the receiver as anything else I could think of.

I can’t imagine doing it differently.

I love it too. I wish I had a B&M store close to me, but I do spend entirely too much money online. How am I supposed to resist buying a DIY kaleidoscope? I think of it as Mad Scientist’s Supply Company.
