So we've covered ink stains on work clothes. Now, how bad is pet hair on clothing?

Getting pet hair entirely out of clothes is really hard.
To prevent the discussion from going haywire over “how much hair is too much”, I will pose the question another way instead, and focus on what kind of effort should go into prevention .
What kind of effort should a worker put in to ensure he or she doesn’t show up with pet hair on clothes? What would you think is a normal effort that can be expected from yourself or a coworker if they want to look normal/respectable?
Poll to follow.

Tip to remove pet hair from the house.

I voted for lint rollers and clothing choice. We have four cats, inside only cats, and all four seem to regard shedding as their honor, duty, and privilege.

It helps, somewhat, to have cat beds. We’ve got five cat beds (one is heated) and several fleece or knitted blankets scattered around the house. The blankets are machine washable. The cats enjoy lounging on the blankets and beds, and do a lot of shedding there.

Lint rollers can be used on furniture as well as clothing, by the way. My husband checks for hair before he leaves for work, and he only wears clothes for one day before washing them, so if he gets a lot of hair on his clothes when he comes home, well, those clothes were going to get washed anyway. I don’t wear streetwear inside the house, I wear panties (always) and usually a nightgown. Well, if someone other than family comes over, I’ll wear a dress.

It’s pretty much impossible to remove all pet hair from the house and from clothing. But I certainly do try my best.

This is the most magical and wonderful thing I have ever found for getting fur off the couch. I’ve been telling everyone I know who’s got cats. Buy one.

As for pet hair on clothes, I think it’s similar to the stains we’ve already discussed. It looks unkempt and like you don’t care how you present yourself, and that can lead to some general conclusions being drawn about you.

I keep a lint roller in the car and I also try my best to buy clothes that don’t attract too much fluff. My strategy for laundry is to get it from dryer to closet ASAP and to avoid sitting on potentially fluffy surfaces or picking up the cats once I’m dressed for work, if I can help it. I still attract some fur (hard not to, with three cats), so the car lint roller does get used on a regular enough basis. My husband will head to work with white fur all over his legs after the cats stop by to say goodbye, and it drives me insane that he doesn’t care.

My lab’s fur isn’t too clingy, if I give myself a waft and quick wipe I’m usually ok. The worst thing is when I open my white macbook at uni or work and there is a big black hair sitting right there, looking like a pube

There is nothing you can do to eliminate them completely, they will pop up sometimes. Just don’t smell of dog, that’s revolting.

Bad, lint rollers will take of it. I have gray cats and gray couches, guests may leave my house with a hairy ass.

Getting microfiber couches helped some, but banning the beasts from the living room furniture helped a lot more. (Yes, even the cat.)
If I wash clothes, take them out of the dryer, then put them in the closet immediately, it’s not an issue unless I actually pick up the cat. Then it’s lint roller time.

I’ve noticed several women recently who have their own hair stuck to their clothes. It’s not exactly a crime, not like ink stains where the offenders should be tortured and shot by irate Dopers who are clearly superior because of the lack of stains on their clothing. After all, clothes make the man, not any of that stuff underneath.

I have a dog who sheds everywhere. With certain fibers (e.g. wool), I can’t wear them in public without using a lint roller.

Funny, I noticed a young man the other day who had dog or cat hair all over his nice cashmere sweater. I had to smile.

I held back on that, ever get an office chair with hair stuck all over it? Rebecca with long black curly hair, and Amanda with long blonde straight hair, shed like crazy, but no one ever stole their office chair (for long…)

I don’t see the analogy. Pet hair can be removed, at least to the point that you can no longer see it. Seeing as people only judge your clothing visually, invisible pet hair is irrelevant. Just like all the invisible stains that are still on all your clothes.

Or get a miniature schnauzer.

I shed more hair than mine does.

I own my business and bring our 3 dogs to work everyday. I drive a Jeep Patriot and just keep the back seats permanently folded down to accommodate the dogs. I chose the last option.

I try my best to not wear cat-hair covered clothes to work (hanging them up fresh out of being washed, changing out of work clothes as soon as I come home, being careful where I sit while I have them on), but there will always be a hair or three on me. I pick them off when I see them - I don’t want to look like a slob in hair-covered clothes.

I have a really severe allergy to cats. One time I walked into someone’s office, and had an almost instant reaction (the type I would usually get if there was a cat in the room), so I asked him if he had a cat in his office. He said no, but he had been at his ex-wife’s house, and she had several cats. We checked his coat, which was hanging on the door, and sure enough it was covered in cat hair.

That only happened the one time, but it made me aware that at least for me, pet hair on clothing can be very bad.

BTW: Do cat owners use those velcro like rubbing strips a friend of mine has? His cats loved them and it kept them and his apartment pretty hair free.

I use packing tape rather than an actual lint roller, but that’s just because I already use quite a bit of it at work.

There are some lines of work and settings where I’d expect people to be pretty careful to not be hairy (food service and whatnot), but in general I’d say I’m pretty relaxed about it.

Meh. As long as someone isn’t positively COVERED in it (excluding food workers), I don’t care.

Heh, I work in zoo education. If I don’t have dog hairs from home on my clothes, I have skunk, ferret, opossum, rabbit, guinea pig, rat, or hedgehog (yes, they have hairy undersides) hairs on my clothes. Nobody around here minds!

You can’t get it all out. If you can get the actual tufts off of you, you’re fine. My daughter has a dark long- haired dog, a light short-haired dog, and a gray cat. It doesn’t matter what you wear; you’re going to see hair!

Way cool.
