Me either. I live with mom and stepdad, currently, to help with their bills. And they…well, they just don’t really do anything for New Years. Unless you think already falling asleep in the recliners as a huge New Years Event.
Or maybe you’re online right now but won’t be later, in a few more hours…so, more specifically, what are you going to be doing tonight at midnight, your time?
I’m surfing the Dope among other sites while I finish binge-watching Westworld for a second time. There’s a lot of “aha!” moments that come about with a repeat viewing.
Working. Sitting here waiting for something to break badly enough that I have to ruin somebody’s party. That hasn’t happened yet, but the night is still young. I’ll be getting home around 11:30 and I’m still debating heading off to my local Irish pub to have a stout or two.
There were options, but my personal tradition for New Year’s Eve for the past few years is to stay home. I live far from town and the rural roads can be treacherous for a whole lot of reasons over the holidays. I try to stay off them.
This year, I had more incentive than usual. I spent most of the day today getting ready for a sustained arctic blast of cold weather we’ll be enduring for most of the upcoming week, including snow and ice. So I stacked lots of wood near the house, finished up weatherizing pipes, made sure livestock will have water and heat, etc.
There’s now a lively fire blazing away in the wood burner, my holiday decorations are twinkling (I decorated a Solstice rake this year), a nice bottle of wine is breathing on the counter, the house is filled with the scent of a chicken roasting with garlic, rosemary and lemon. I’ve got my feet up, half watching reruns of Sherlock while perusing a few favorite websites/forums.
By midnight, I’ll probably be sawing logs after having smooched the Dachshund for good luck in the new year.
We’re actually going to a party at a friend’s house in a couple hours; a major change from our normal routine of “watch TV, and maybe stay up all the way until midnight, if we really feel like it”.
sleeping (hopefully.) Tomorrow is the last day of deer season so I need to be up by 5 a.m. not that my answer would be different otherwise; NYE isn’t a thing for me.
It’s pouring down rain outside, we don’t do parties much anyway, and I’d rather spend the evening with my lovely wife and crazy cats than with a bunch of drunk semi-strangers. Especially since I would then have to drive home in aforementioned rain with the also aforementioned drunks on the road with me.
Went out this afternoon and burned up a shitload of .22 ammo. Shredded a bunch of tomato sauce and refried bean cans. Got a new .22 pistol not long ago and got the parts to fix one I had. They got a pretty good workout this afternoon. Once the guns were cleaned and put away I broke out the beer and fired up the internet. Ate a shitty frozen pizza, watched the Austin City Limits New Years show. Yawn. Now Antiques Road Show is playing with the sound down while I surf music videos on YT.
Happy fuckin’ New Years.
Meet the new year, same as the old year…
And switching channels to the Starsky and Hutch marathon during the commercials. Had to shit-can the football games, too sucky. How da fuck did Ohio St. get into the playoffs? Embarrassing.
Oh, and slowly getting drunk on Red Beer and Tequila. Or not so slowly.
Just finished my last 2016 donation online. Because I was already online, I decided to take a quick look at the SDMB.
Now I’m going to work with my son on the next step in building this great LEGO Disney Castle that we got for Christmas. If we’re still awake later, we’ll watch Trading Places (a New Year’s tradition for us).
…or maybe we’ll just go to bed after the ball drops.
