So what are you drinking these days?

One bourbon. One scotch. One beer.

Actually, I’ve been drinking martinis fairly often these days. Instead of an olive, I go for a couple drops of orange bitters.

To stop my binge drinking entirely undoing my good work at the Gym, I’ve switched from excessive amounts of beer to Vodka & Tonic, preferably slimline if I can swallow my pride and ask for it.

Although last night I was drinking Vodka & soda, which I was surprised I liked (needs a fair bit of lemon/lime, though). Gave me no hangover whatsoever. I will remember this.

Regarding not liking gin: Is that gin specifically, or do you not like herbal flavor profiles in general? (Do you like vermouth, for example?)

For vodka drinks, the Cosmopolitan is tried-and-true. Note that if it’s made correctly, it’s not a girly drink–it’s aggressively sour. Let me know if you need me to post the recipe.

If you have access to good ginger ale, you could always make a Moscow Mule:

Get a big glass with ice.
Squeeze in a lime; drop the peel into the glass.
Pour in enough vodka.
Fill with good ginger ale. I like to use Blenheim’s red-cap stuff. If all you have is Canada Dry or something like that, don’t even bother.
If you like screwdrivers, try adding a little Cointreau.

If you want something dessert-ish, try mixing equal parts Kahlua and Chambord (or the equivalent), then cutting it with vodka till it’s not too cloying.

Regarding rum, the Cuban Sidecar would be good. And of course, there’s always the Mojito…

I’m sticking by my old stand-by, Crown Royal and Pepsi. I’m also drinking red wine with dinner.

I’m going ice fishing in a few weeks, I think I’ll go with Long Island ice-tea.

But I’ll drink anything that evaporates faster than water!

Here’s a nice little drink for the ladies (and men):

Cherry Sour

2 Ounces frozen Absolute Black Current Vodka
2 Ounces Sour Puss Cherry Liquor
2 Ounces Cranberry juice

Shake with ice in a martini shaker, serve in a martini glass with a couple of frozen cranberries for garnish.

MtM

My favorite drink, the Passamaquoddy Punch:
-1/2 cranberry juice cocktail (if you can get the 100% fruit version, it seems to be less cloyingly sweet)
-1/2 lime seltzer
-Shot of light rum
-Generous dash of angostura

I don’t like it on ice: get it plain! Garnish with lime, if you need a garnish.

Daniel

Godfather: JW Black Label and Amaretto 1:1 on ice.

Yuengling.

Dopplebock. The ever present Optimator, but I’ve also sampled Salvator and Celebrator - if anyone has other dopplebock recommends, I’ll take them. The Optimator still stands up to my cost-benefit analysis however, so I drove the 35 miles to my nearest BevMo to stock up (I needed more Hendrick’s and Noilly Prat, too, so I made it an outing). One can never have too much beer!

Same here, mostly Wild Turkey 101 or Booker’s. (Thanks, silenus, for the heads up on both.) Macallan 12 on special occasions.

But like you with tequila, I’m discovering that I like it a little too much. Had to back off, as I found myself creeping up from one or two drinks a night to half a bottle.

I’ll be glad when Marguerita and Martini season returns. I don’t seem so inclined to overdo it with the mixed drinks.

Another easy Caribbean goodie is the Cuban Breeze:

1 oz. Tequila
1 oz. Creme de Almond
6 oz. Pineapple juice

Combine ingredients, stir, pour over ice and garnish with a maraschino cherry.

Good stuff.

Laphroig (the 10 year old is better than the 15), rocks. Stuffy I know, but its so good. If you like scotch you want to taste the barrel.

Michter’s 10 year-old single barrel rye. Discovered this over Christmas, and am now on my second bottle. Remarkably good whiskey!

For the most part, I drink it neat. Sometimes over a couple of ice cubes.

Try using the Michter’s in a Whiskey Cocktail (aka the Old-Fashioned):

In a glass, crush a sugarcube (or an equivalent amount of sugar) in just enough water to dissolve it.
Add a dash or two of angostura bitters.
Add 2-3 ice cubes.
Add whiskey; stir a little.
Squeeze a big twist of orange and drop the twist in the drink.

Regarding the request for vodka drinks upthread, I fogot to mention that if you make a Kamikaze (equal parts vodka, Cointreau, and fresh lime juice) with good ingredients, it comes out as a surprisingly good drink. You might also want to add a dash or two of angostura bitters.

Trust me. This whiskey is way too good to put in an Old-Fashioned. I love an old-fashioned made with rye, but not 10 year-old single barrel rye!

I’ve never tried vermouth, so I’m not sure if it’s the “herbal” thing or not. However, I’m relatively neutral on Brennivin , which has some spices and such in it.

The Moscow Mule sounds good, but I’ll have to do some looking to find a good ginger ale, as I haven’t had a good one since I tried a homebrew type while at a renaissance festival over four years ago.

My mom’s a big fan of the Cosmopolitan, and eventually I’ll probably try one.

I love White Russians, but they have to be made with half and half, not milk, which means they’re not exactly a low-calorie refreshment.

I created a sort of variant of Nuts & Berries that ups the ante slightly by adding vanilla vodka… it’s nummers. (Frangelico, Chambord, cream/half&half, and the aforementioned vanilla vodka)

Recently I’ve been drinking a lot of wine, rather than liquor, which is actually kind of weird for me.

lately I’m addicted to Belgian ales, especially strong ones. Trippels, Quadrupels, anything made by monks’ll do… my favorite so far is Kwak. God, what a beer. My favorite trippel is Victory Golden Monkey. That stuff is 9.5% and it’s like the pumpkin pie of beers. In fact, anything by Victory is quality (Storm King Stout particularly comes to mind)… man, I’ve gotten so used to drinking the good stuff now that I can’t hardly stomach a Budweiser anymore. Even Shiner’s starting to taste a bit dull.

As for liquor, I’m having a love affair with Tuaca. I can drink Tuaca and Diet all night… I wonder how it’d taste with Sprite.

I’ve been going through Captain and Coke like water for the last few weekends. Mostly because the kinds of bars and pool halls that I’ve been in haven’t had Black Bush, which I’ve been in the mood for lately. (“What Irish whiskeys do you have?” “Uhhhh, just Jameson’s.” “I hate you and everything that you stand for. Captain and Coke, please.”)

That drink sounds really, really good. And would probably mess me up in short order.

My contribution is Old Overholt and Coke. It’s growing on me.

If you like the Captain, try Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum. It got me off of the Captain, so to speak.
