(Was too beat yesterday after the Xmas stuff to post.) Yesterday I was holding my 2 month (to the day) old grandchild up in front of me. A stare down contest ensued. Good grief, this kid can just look you in the eye for several minutes without stopping. I had to stop and rest my arms. Then we went for round 2. The kid won again.
Fist time the kid did this for me. Big smile on grandpa.
Day after xmas we had arranged for my family to meet for sushi at a restaurant we love. Then my brother (who asked me to arrange the dinner, as he’d be flying from Colorado) passed away Friday 13th.
Everyone still wanted to get together. My daughter and her husband came from upstate New York. My brother’s son came from Colorado.
The place is BYOB, so everyone brought bottles of wine. My daughter held hers up to show me, and the label zoomed over my head. I thought it meant that they weren’t drinking it so we could. Then I got it.
I’m smiling.
This morning my too-clever cat was digging in the drawers as usual after opening it. Next she pulled out her later pointer, seemingly at random, and it drops to the floor. Mom and I glance at each other…is she as clever a cat as she seems?
And yes, Till the cat did pick it up and carry it over to me. She also looked at me when I turned it off and gave me some peremptory snacks to continue. My leg has claw marks and she’s overstimulated, but I’m still smiling.
I’ve seen one of mine bring a mouse over and drop it in front of the dog’s nose.
I’m pretty sure he was trying to teach the puppy to hunt. And that he was eventually successful; though the pup at first seemed to think the mice were just toys, without even recognizing that they were edible.
– I’ve also seen half-grown kittens feed their younger siblings, after their mother was taken away (we didn’t realize the younger litter was still alive, when the previous owner moved and took the mother. Once I realized it of course I fed them also.)
I’ve been smiling pretty much nonstop since arriving in Sint Maarten. Everything here is warm, blue, and green. Everything back home was icy cold and grey.
My son (10) had a book he had to read for school. It looked interesting so I picked it up and read it too this week, more or less keeping pace with him. We’ve talked about the characters, the setting, what we thought was going to happen, etc. I finished it last night, he read the last chapters today. We had a good discussion on the plot and how satisfied we are with the ending.
I often read books he reads, but this was the first time we read one “together”.
It’s like our own little book club, and it’s been so fun!
Come on, you know we want to hear what book it was!
Some of the best times of my life was when I used to drive the kids to school and we’d listen to audio books together. We particularly liked the Lemony Snicket and Roald Dahl stuff.
I have the first two or three Lemony Snickets but I didn’t get into them when I read them (as an adult, before having a kid). Maybe I’ll find them and see what he thinks.
I’ve posted somewhere about finding the Bunnicula books again and my son had read the first; I can’t wait for him to get to later books because he will love the puns from the character Howie.
I also still enjoy reading Gordon Korman books. The original Bruno and Boots - or maybe Bugs Potter - remain favorites but the newer books are still fun, light-hearted fare. My son hasn’t picked up any yet.
He read another book for school that I didn’t read, but he says he’ll ask the teacher if he can borrow it for me. I forget the title though.
Ooh I’m sure he could make anything sound great! I don’t read audio books, I’d zone out and miss parts for sure.
I consider these books that are primarily for the preteen crowd to sort of be “palate cleansers” between more involved novels, but they’re also fun because they generally aren’t going to spend any time on explaining complicated politics or science or magic systems or whatever. The world just is this way, from the perspective of a 12 year old protagonist, and the plot can just develop from there. And now being able to share it with my son is a great bonus.
Spent part of the day with my youngest, his two daughters, his girlfriend and her daughter. Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup all around and lots of laughs. A good day.
