The question popped into my head and refuses to go away. Did Jesus have any of Mary’s DNA? Did God create a whole new set for Jesus? Or did he not have any, being a different sort of creature than us mere mortals?
In graduate school, I wrote a paper for my seminar on Milton entitled "What were Parking rates like in Eden?, arguing that asking questions about Biblical figures framed in terms of a technological culture several millenia later than the events described therein leads only to frustration. The further we advance, the weirder and more irrelevant the Bible gets. Far as I’m concerned, the whole thing makes LOST look like a masterfully outlined, totally accessible narrative that makes perfect sense on every level.
I have wondered this exact thing. I recall a book (Crichton writing?) about a guy that was given a piece of the Turin shroud by a high-ranking priest and took some DNA from it and inserted into himself for some reason. I wondered what bits & pieces of DNA would be included in the shroud’s ‘stains’.
I do not believe in the Shroud itself whatsoever, fwiw…just saying what was in the book (of fiction).
I would assume it was a combination of DNA from Mary and Joseph. If God can make Jesus in there without them actually having sex, then he can put him in there looking the same as if they did. Besides, Jesus wasn’t a particularly “different” looking dude from everyone else so I’m sure God just said “this is what he’d look like if M and J did do it.”
In reality, IMHO, if he existed he had human father and normal DNA.
If we speculate on how a supernatural god, who has limitless power, would do this, almost anything is possible, DNA-wise. Whatever problem or question that might arise is solved by “God fixed it with his magic!”
A more interesting question in my mind is why god needed a woman to carry his child in the first place. I think the answer to that is that the bronze-age human authors of this tale didn’t really think out the whole omnipotence thing, or perhaps didn’t yet believe Jehova was omnipotent and was still considered just a storm god.
Historically, Jesus got half his DNA from his mother and half from his entirely human father just like everybody else.
Theologically speaking, you can fanwank whatever you want. The Bible doesn’t give an answer because the authors of the New Testament didn’t know anything about DNA. They also didn’t know that without a human father, Jesus couldn’t have received a Y chromosome and could not have been a male.
What if His DNA is whatever the next link in the evolutionary chain from ape to missing link to Neanderthal to Cro Magnon to us to whatever is next would have.
God was vamping, and made up the other half out of His head – heck, he’d effectively done that uncountable times before.
And it probably glowed in the dark with Holy Radiance.
Do we know for sure that Jesus was definitely male? Does the bible describe Christ’s penis at any point? Any pictures I see have him in long hair and a dress. Admittedly she tends to be shown with a beard, but that only suggests that, had the whole messiah thing failed to work out, she could have sought alternative employment with a travelling circus.
