She automagically lost some of the clothes. Hope the RNC asks for a reimbursement of what was lost.
I agree though it was the RNC’s money so there is no scandal. It’s between them and her. I think it does reinforce what type of person Palin is and what a colossally scary leader she would make but that is water over the dam now.
What I do not get is how you donate such clothes to charity. Are there a lot of people going through resale shops looking for bargains on $5000 suits?
I have a tutorial student who is writing a paper about Leda, Europa, & Ganymede, and I did not realize until this moment how much that topic has infiltrated my thoughts.
As someone observed upthread, assuming Senator McCain was sincere, ‘donated to charity’ is shorthand for ‘resold at auction and the proceeds donated to charity.’
Though some of the proceeds will surely go to hookers and blow.
If so, then either Newsweek or the aides they talked to must be lying. From my earlier cite:
I’m not saying your hypothetical scenario is less plausible, or necessarily less accurate, than this report. But the two are irreconcilable. Either your guess about how Palin acquired her clothes is wrong, or somebody else is lying.
What I don’t get is why they claimed she wasn’t going to keep the clothes in the first place. Wouldn’t she have needed them as VP? Why didn’t McCain just say “she needs a wardrobe appropriate for her anticipated position as VP of the United States”?
Well to that I’d say it is still a stink for donors to the RNC. I am unaware of any job where once hired they agree to hand you a new wardrobe. She is responsible for her own wardrobe like anyone else. Besides, she is a Governor. Surely she has enough suits to be suitably dressed.
At most, if they really felt her wardrobe was insufficient, would be to offer her a loan up front to stock the closet which she would be expected to pay back.
I would guess there’s some rule in place saying they can’t buy clothes to keep (or much of anything, really) out of the funds donated by their followers. Stuff they get to keep, they have to buy themselves. That’s why we pay them.
I hereby volunteer my services to oversee the return of Ms. Palin’s campaign wardrobe. Ms. Palin, my home is open to you, say, tonight? Around 8ish? I’ll provide the wine. I should be ready to begin taking possession of your clothes by around 9 o’clock or so…
Sure they don’t. It isn’t like a Bush–appointed member of the DOJ would ever go after a Democrat on an election based issue.
On the other hand, tax evasion certainly IS a crime, and if Palin and family keep the clothes, they’re going to have to declare the $150K (or is it $190K?) as income, cf Senator Stevens and that chair he claimed wasn’t his.
Who’s gloating? I’m genuinely curious. I am also curious as to when this wedding between Plymouth and The Cable Guy’s Son is going to happen.
I don’t care if she won or lost (well, I do), but the point is this: she claims to be all about self-sufficiency and responsibility and plain dealing. So, let’s see some. She’s welcoming “I’m a fucking redneck and don’t want kids” into the family and is happy, happy, happy about it–so when and where is it happening? Which charity gets these clothes? Are Todd’s clothes also being given away? How about all those kiddie clothes? Are those kids ever going to go to school?
I think that some folks (perhaps not the ones here) feel she should get to keep the clothes as a consolation prize. I would have been fine with that–but they said she’d be giving them away. So, keep your word and do so.
But then again, it has only been 2 days. Let’s give her some time to actually unpack said clothes and get them dry-cleaned…
The wedding most likely was postponed until after the election. Fair enough. Still, she came out so harsh and judgmental against Dems and Obama, I see no reason to cut her slack, despite her loss. I don’t believe for one minute that if this were Michelle Obama and the girls we were discussing that they would be cut any slack. I hope the state of AK pursues compensation for the kids’ hotel rooms and plane fare.
My understanding is that Governor Palin will be modeling the clothes at the charity auction herself - and once sold, the clothes will be removed immediately.
