I got this idea from that thread about the douchiness scale.
This isn’t about what tv shows you like. To qualify for fandom, you must at least have posted to a website dedicated to that particular tv show, musical act, movie, or comic book, excuse me, graphic novel. List your credentials if you like.
Me? I’m a MSTie, Whoite, Bonanza fan. I have attended MSTie conventions, Dr Who conventions (in costume yet) I have written four fanfic Dr Who novels and am writing a Dr Who/Bonanza crossover fanfic.
I’ve recovered. Back in high school I was into comicbooks and went to conventions (no websites around). I stopped buying due to finacial reasons after I graduated with the intent of going back but I never did.
Lapsed member of Stark Trek, Babylon 5, Tolkien, DCU and Thundercats fandoms. I’ve stopped buying the comics, but I think still being in RPGs pertaining to the Elfquest and X-Men characters qualifies me as still being in those fandoms. Still reading Gold Digger, but no longer part of the fandom, per se.
Also, unapologetic comic-book geek. The SO and I will be spending part of our honeymoon at the San Diego Con in July.
Active: Supernatural, MST3K, Buffy, Iron Man.
In the past: Lord of the Rings, Futurama, X men, Lost, House, Jeeves and Wooser, X Files, and probably about twenty I’m forgetting.
Star Wars: attended three Star Wars Celebrations, wrote articles for fanzines, appeared in two indie documentary feature films about Star Wars fandom, have a (relatively untouched) blog on StarWars.com, have a shelf-full of collectibles (pared down from a wall full). I could go on.
Hanson: own all the records, member of the fan club since 1999, attended 12 concerts (pretty low on the fandom scale actually), attended meet-and-greets, waited outside venues for autographs, know all their birthdays and wives/kids’ names, follow on Twitter, relentless advocacy on this board, etc.
ETA: Even though I’m obsessed with it while it’s on, I can’t really say American Idol since I have never attended an AI concert or a performance by any current or former Idol.
I can’t seem to stay in fandoms. I’ve been pretty obsessed with things over the years… some obscure TV shows, a video game or two, various bands. But every time I join a fandom I end up quietly slipping out because everyone else is way more enthusiastic than I am and it’s a little scary, because, like I said, I’d be pretty into it myself. Maybe this is a good thing.
Harry Potter. Four midnight release parties, the last one in costume. Luckily for me, the local news was at the bookstore, so my big fat ass in a witch costume was on the 11 o’clock news and just about everyone I know saw it. My immediate family obviously knew what I was up to, but it was quite a surprise to my coworkers.
Harry Potter for sure, though not since '07 or so; Star Trek: DS9 too, since I remember having a conversation with Ron Moore back over on the AOL board dedicated to the show. And American Gothic (the one-season CBS show in the mid-1990s).
Do mailing lists count? If so, then add The Simpsons and the Nero Wolfe books by Rex Stout.
What if you want to post on a forum but are too chicken? I’m like that for Order of the Stick then.
For a couple of years I got caught up in the madness surrounding the LOTR films and posted quite a bit to http://theonering.net. I also hosted viewing parties for all the movies and paid $50 for a preview screening of ROTK with a special appearance by Ian McKellen. I’ve read the book (and “The Hobbit”) several times.
There are other things of which I consider myself as much or more a fan, but that’s the only one that met (past tense) the OP’s dedicated Web site requirement.
Thundercats - I used to have a website devoted to (light-hearted) nitpicking of the series, msts of the comics, fanfic, fanart, and for a while a webcomic. The webcomic moved to a different site. I also created the one complete and accurate Thundercats font.
Silverhawks - same deal on the same site
Batman - I’ve posted to a number of LJs and created fanfic and fanart
Pokemon - created fanfic and fanart and posted it.
Digimon - used to post to the newsgroup.
Star Trek - went to a couple of conventions
X-men - went to a couple of comic conventions. Owned hundreds of comics. It was a big influence on some of my writing.
Hellsing - I’ve posted to the LJ community, I read ‘And Shine Heaven Now’ the major fancomic, created wallpaper, spent significant amounts of time messing with the images.
Kimono - post to a board, am working on a mini-wiki for my own reference
I’ve attended the World Science Fiction Convention and voted for the Hugo Awards, but by the standards of the OP, I’m not any kind of fan at all. I guess that’s a good thing.
In the past: X-Files, and Twin Peaks. Man, back in the Twin Peaks days you really had to work hard to be a fan, I think I had to wait on average between 20 and 30 minutes to get the dial-up connected and logged in to the newsgroup.
Weirdly enough, my biggest, most active fandom is Betsy-Tacy, which I am assuming about three of you know what that is. For everyone else, it’s a series of children’s books set at the turn of the (previous) century, and it has a small but extremely dedicated following. I’ve been to two national conventions, and am on the steering committee of my local chapter. The membership is open to anyone, but I think in reality it’s about 99% women. Within that, we’re fairly diverse in terms of region, interest and age.
