What's Your Fandom?

NoClueBoy, carnivorousplant, and I are Trekkies; Guinistasia, lno, and **SPOOFE **are fans of Star Wars; Fenris, Askia, and **rjung ** love comics; and Otto, SkipMagic, and **pepperlandgirl **are *BtVS * fanboys.

What are you? What’s your overriding* passion in terms of entertainment? Is it a particular universe in TV or film? A certain author? Art? Music? Sports? What one (or two or three) things do you focus on more than anything else? How did you become a fan? If it’s more obscure or not quite as mainstream as the examples given (or even if it is), can you explain it and maybe give examples of its best work?

*My apologies in advance for presuming to list my eleven examples’ passions when the ones given might not be. You were just the names I most readily associate with those fandoms.

As far as TV series go

Farscape, I love farscape. I wouldn’t call it mainstream, infact a surprisingly low amount of people even know what it is. It’s cancelled now, although it never should have been. Scifi channel recently produced a farscape miniseries to finally finish the story for us fans.

The show had a great many levels to enjoy on it; the comedy, the action, the CGI was great, and the love story as well, and they managed to juggle all of those perfectly. The story, in a VERY brief description, is about a young astronaut who gets launched through a wormhole while experimenting just outside earth. When he comes out of it, he’s VERY far away from earth. So much that he’s the only human there. Its about his adventures there, however the story gets very complex and deep the further you go into the series (the reason it was cancelled pretty much).

A short description like that does not do the show justice. If you’re actually interested go to Farscape.com or watchfarscape.com to get a lot more information on the characters and storyline.

I own all 4 seasons on DVD and have pre-ordered the miniseries (comes out in late january I believe)

Star Wars, (mostly Marvel) Comics, and Simpsons.

(Much to my chagrin, since 2002, NASCAR. How embarrassing.)

Heh. I have all four of your examples, and raise you ‘roleplaying games’.

I am a fan of many shows. I can’t pinpoint one and say that this has been my main focus. The closest I get to that is my devotion for film composer Jerry Goldsmith. (I’m listening to his Russia House score right now, as it happens.) I’ve listened to and collected his work since I was 11. Big fan. Huge fan.

When it comes to TV shows and movies, I started watching Star Trek and have been a fan since then. However, I haven’t kept up on all the series. (I’ve missed whole seasons of TNG and DS9, and watched Voyager sporatically.) There’s a reason for this which has nothing to do with the quality of the shows. (Kind of a long story.) But I’ve always been a fan. I finally returned to my Star Trek fandom with Enterprise, which I am enjoying very much. I’ve always been a big Star Wars fan too—waited in line down on Hollywood Blvd. for the premieres of some of the movies. Devoted fan. Well, not as much as many, but in my own way, a devoted fan.

I also embraced Farscape and have seen all seasons. I consider myself a big Stargate SG-1 fan too, though I am catching up with some of the older seasons. In the past I watched (and have in my tape collection) shows like Quantum Leap and Twilight Zone, and that old schlocky (but fabulous) science fiction show V. Remember VR-5? Love that too. And Misfits of Science? Oh, and I discovered Firefly by renting the DVDs. LOVE it.

Some non-science fiction shows I’m a fan of are Wagon Train (yes, the old western series—I have a thing about westerns), Due South (Paul Gross. I rest my case) and 24. And there are many more.

I’m pretty much a equal opportunity fan (when it comes to science fiction, especially). Since I spread my interests out over many shows I don’t have time to get really deep into each show (moreso with Star Trek and Star Wars than the others, though), but I will go through “jags” where I’ll have to rewatch the whole series again. I am pretty loyal—once I’m a fan, I usually stay a fan for a good long time.

Genre TV: Doctor Who
Comic book: Daredevil
Genre fiction: Raymond Chandler

As the OP, I suppose I should say more than “I’m a Trekkie”.

I first got into Trek as a whole in '93 or '94 when I watched reruns of TNG on Friday nights. There was never anything else on and I watched it out of boredom and stubborness (it came on at 10:00, my weeknight bedtime, and I wasn’t going to go to bed a minute before I had to on the weekend) and, eventually, I found myself liking the episodes. A year or so later, I discovered *Voyager *and then the novels. After that, Deep Space Nine, and then, finally, the movies and Enterprise.

Of the five series, my favorite series by far is Deep Space Nine and I identify with it above all else. I like the other series (sans the original and the cartoon) just fine but it’s DS9, with its flawed characters and moral ambiguities that really hooked me. That, and the serial nature of the series later on… three things not found in any of the other series. You’d never see Picard sanction murder to save lives and Kirk just isn’t half the man (in my opinion) that Sisko is.

Adding all that together with the exceptional characterization of the series regulars and a good dozen or more of the recurring characters and it’s … just great. I can’t put it any other way. I sometimes get chills when watching some of its episodes and reading its Relaunch novels makes the little fanboy in me squeal.

I’m an unabashed geek.

If you want to try some episodes, I suggest seasons six and seven, the last two of the series. Being highly serialized, it would be best to try to watch them all in order though. If that isn’t your thing, the more episodic seasons three and four are really good as well.

Also, so as to not stereotype (but at the same time, embarass) myself, I will admit to being really into numerous other series over the years, including: Joan of Arcardia, Jake 2.0, Friends, Buffy the Vampire Slayers, Marvel comics in general, X-Men comics in particular, and the now defunct World Championship Wrestling. Not WWF/E though. I have some standards.

Musical theatre: Andrew Lloyd Webber (brother Julian, Tim Rice and ABBA works also sneak in there)
Comic books: Legion of Super-Heroes. I have a 42 year old collection!

Jesus films
Ayn Rand books (I’m a C’tian right-libertarian, tho, not an Objectivist)
Conspiracy theories
Dracula
Twin Peaks
Universal/Hammer/AIP Horror films
Rapture novels
Buffy

Oh, no offense taken … but Star Wars?

Maybe for me to poop on…

Lord of the Rings is my weakness - Books since junior high (I have 2 of my 3 original paperbacks) and the movies now as a 51-year old. I embarass my 13 year daughter. But who cares? It’s mine, my precious, and I’ll geek out if I want to.
That’s my only really big pop culture obsession, but I did really get into Dr. Who as well as Blake’s 7 for a while.

Authors: **Neal Stevenson, William Gibson, Bruce Sterling ** (not a lot of variety here  )

Discworld. I’m just a fan, not a fanatic I’m happy reading the books, I don’t feel the need to dress up a wiz(z)ard or anything.

Graphic Novels: Sandman. The Neil Gaiman stuff not the spinoffs.

I used to have this thing about the actress Barbara Harris which means I do have some films that are not SciFi. I see A thousand Clowns is available from Amazon. I guess my Barbara infatuation is over since I’m not perpared to cough up $39.95 for it. Once upon a time I would have. I may be the only person ever to buy Nice Girls Don’t Explode on video.

I am a general science fiction/fantasy fan, not really devoted to a single author, although Heinlein’s juveniles brought me into the genre at an early age.

Transformers (High expert)
Legion of Super Heroes
Star Wars
Star Trek (TOS mostly, TNG after)
Anime (Gundam specialist, as far as that goes, but it’s not even close to my favorite series, Slayers is.)
All comics, with a speciality in Superman and Spider-Man, high expert 1938-2000, medium expert since.
Computers, but that’s professional
Role-Playing Games, high expert. (I am still missing that copy of Spawn of Fashan, though)
Toys in general, medium to high expert. GI Joe to Microman to MEGO to, well, what have you. Roadbusters, Robotix.
Slight movie geek.

Sci-Fi TV; Farscape, the only show worth a damn on skiffy’s network, unceremoneously canceled by bonnie hammer and the other brainless suits at skiffy, but hey, we got our frellin’ miniseries to tie up some loose ends, but there are still unresolved threads…

What about the Nebari contagion
will Rygel go back and remove Bishan from the throne

Is D’Argo really dead?

literature; anything by Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, or Michael Crichton (why do i always see the name as John Crichton when i first see it? )

Computers; the Mac (Obviously), i hate steve jobs and apple corporate (for reasons i won’t go into here), but they still make the best hardware in the industry, just too bad the corporate suits are evil,we need to get Woz backin there…

The Dark Tower.
D&D.
Used books.

I’m a bit of a TNG trekkie, but I didn’t like any of the other series.

I’m a cinematography geek.

Yeah. With the way the story is now, they could easily continue the series for many many years and never run out of good storyline.

Farscape’s cancellation was a sad sad thing :frowning:
