The Onion AV Club's Top Nerd Pop-Culture Obsessions - how do YOU rate?

See list here. Sorry, I’m not gonna have time to paste in the list - it would require cleaning up.

Not bad - might swap a few things out and in, but there you go.

As far as how I rate - well, I’d have to do more review but I certainly qualify for a few of them - Star Trek, Monty Python, Joss Whedon and a few others…

So - how much are YOU a Pop-Culture Obsessed Nerd?

Current:
Fantasy Sports
The Simpsons
Facebook

Former:
Magic: The Gathering (stopped just before Exodus came out. I can’t believe that was almost 10 years ago.)

I guess my nerdish leanings go in another direction.

I enjoyed their list, I being a pop-culture obsessed nerd in many ways.
From their list, I’m a “Doctor Who” fan - and while I’m obsessing over BBC sci-fi I don’t forget “Blake’s 7”.
Was surprised to see “Lord of the Rings” wasn’t on the list! not “pop” enough?
Anime was listed but not comics culture in general. Oh well, they couldn’t list everything.

Wow. If you stick to ‘obsessions’, I’ve only got 5 out of the 20 listed. If you dilute it down to ‘likes’, it’s still only 9 or 10. I thought I was a bigger geek than that. I’ll clearly have to get cracking.

0 for 20!

Good god almighty, I’m not a nerd! does happy dance

What?

Oh, I’m so pleased to see Joss Whedon’s Equality Now speech! That was one really awesome speech, and everyone should hear it. I want to send it back in a time machine so that I can have appropriated it in high school for speech team.

Me:

Recovered from
Rocky Horror
Ren Faire (okay, okay, I still make and wear garb, but I don’t work there anymore! Maybe I’m in recovery.)
**
Fan of, but not obsessed with:**
Battlestar Galactica
Dr. Who (the current incarnations, especially)
MySpace

Guilty as charged:
Joss Whedon.

Wow, I am much less nerdy that I thought. My sins:

Star Trek
WoW
Anime
Cosplay
Rocky Horror

I’ve also repented for Magic: The Gathering.

I may have to have my geek card revoked.

Star Trek
Joss Whedon
WoW
Anime

Cosplay i’d probably be interested in, except I really don’t have the looks for it. Unlike some people i’m able to recognise that.

Cosplay’s like karaoke. It doesn’t matter so much if you’re any good at it, what matters is you’re participating.

And no, cosplay isn’t one of my obsessions. I just like laughing at poor costumes and complimenting good ones. :stuck_out_tongue:

My only things are that I participate in a (1) fantasy football league, but it’s a friendly, casual thing and I don’t really give a shit and I lose most games.

My band has a MySpace page, but I don’t socialize using MySpace.

So, I’m

The Simpsons is the only one I have any real connection to…

Fantasy sports is the only thing on there that I do.

But, I only do fantasy nascar, and fantasy bowling, so I’m still cool.

I’ve always considered myself a pretty nerdy guy, but never in a pop-culture kind of way. Like twickster, I clock in at zero out of 20. Maybe I’m not cool enough to be a nerd.

I’ve recovered from Magic: The Gathering.

Outside of that, I think I have only one or two. Fantasy sports and Michael Jackson are my sins.

Am I cool enough to do the Cool Kid Dance with you, twix?

Grew out of Rocky Horror Picture Show.

And for a Brit, Dr Who doesn’t count, because the entire country watched it - though the later series may get the geek vote, but I haven’t watched it.

I use FaceBook for keeping in touch with my IRL friends, but I’ll warrant that I do indulge.

That’s it really.

ETA: oh dear Christ, I just remembered, I once spent a weekend in the 1980s at Peckforton Castle, dressed up as a peasant, doing real-life role playing. :o The shame.

I’m on facebook but all my friends there are real-life friends except one (someone from a TV show I like), and that’s not my main source of socializing with them. Other than that, nothing on the list applies to me.

LARP mainly, the odd Fanfic and I enjoy Joss Whedon’s work…

If there was anything resembling a RenFaire nearby I’d probably check it out, but there is nothing.

I have a Myspace and Facebook, but hardly use either (Facebook wins out slightly, though not by much).

Not very geeky at all.

Not obsessed, really, but I can speak the language of:
Star Trek
Joss Whedon
Battlestar Galactica
Dr. Who
Monty Python

I hate almost all those things. I guess I liked the Star Trek: The Next Generation series and a few of the movies.

Interestingly, even as a rabid baseball and hockey fan, I don’t like rotisserie leagues.

My two guilty pleasures are “World of Warcraft” and “The Simpsons,” but I’m not sure if I qualify as geeky about “The Simpsons.” Is just watching the show enough? Based on their description, I don’t think so - I think I’m obliged to speak in Simpsons quotes on a regular basis to be a true Simpsons nerd.

Okay, Python I know.

Kicks dirt

Man, I’m never going to get my nerd card.
