Whedon and social networking (livejournal, but not facebook or myspace) are the only two I would say are obsessions. Wikipedia’s only something I’m somewhat interested in (reading, not contributing) and I’ve fallen out of love with Star Trek.
#8 est moi.
Other than that I’m clean.
Oh, this is probably going to sting.
Actually, not so bad. There were some things I’ve done a little of - watched some Star Trek, written one or two Wikipedia entries, wrote one piece of fanfiction at the turn of the millennium - but only two that hit home big time.
The Simpsons. Not denying anything here, my own posting history would prove I’m a liar anyway. I’ve seen every episode, most of them several times, can quote or identify pretty much any good line or episode, I know the styles of the writers, I own all the DVDs and I think I’ve heard all the commentaries. Other than the DVDs, though, I actually don’t own any Simpsons stuff. I have one shirt someone gave me as a gift, and I did buy a box of Krusty-Os, two action figures and some cookies when 7-11 did their Kwik-E-Mart promotion, but almost all of those things were gifts for my little brother. I also wrote a fanfic Simpsons script, but that was for my brother, too, and given the circumstances I hope I can get a pass on that.
And Rocky Horror checks out. Between the movie and the staged version, which is never even 10 percent as much fun, I’ve probably seen it 15 times. The people at the Chelsea Clearview do it really well, although if there aren’t a few knowledgeable people yelling out the lines it can get dull. I’m surprised there wasn’t an item about bad movies on the list. That’d be me, too.
Wow, they just about completely bypassed me. I do RenFaire, I write fanfic (on occasion) and I used to be into Star Trek (and why isn’t Star Wars on that list?) I like anime & manga, but I’m not an obsessed fan of any one series… well, maybe Hellsing.
A Michael Jackson fan? I think not.
They’ve got me on Facebook, but I know everyone on my friends list in real life, and I only add people I’d genuinely consider to be friends. I visit Wikipedia several times a day but I don’t have an account and I’d edited entries fewer than half a dozen times. I also go only on Wikipedia to do specific searches, not to just see what’s new or anything. I’m also a fan of Doctor Who and The Simpsons, but I’m not a crazy superfan. I used to quote and reference The Simpsons all the time in high school, but not much since then. Everything else on the list ranges from “uninterested” to “hate strongly and feel creeped out about.”
Edit: Wow, this post appears to be written by a person in deep denial.
I knew that was the answer.
thrusts hands in his pockets and kicks an errant pebble
… Dude, they don’t even have romhacking on that list. That? Nerdy? You want nerdy? I’ll show you nerdy!
I’m a Simpsons geek I guess, but a mild case. I used to play fantasy sports, but I found it to be too much like work.
I Wanna Be The Guy isn’t a romhack- it’s an original game which features cameos from characters from other games. That said, I’ve seen some very creative romhacks, such as the one in this video which has shown up on this board a number of times. (Warning: strong language)
I sometimes edit Wikipedia, but I am not a Wikipedia nerd. I’ve seen a few episodes of The Next Generation and loved them, but I am not a Star Trek nerd. I am, however, a Simpsons nerd- although I don’t “start frothing at the mouth the moment somebody suggests the show maybe kinda sorta is not all that funny anymore.” I will admit there have been a lot of bad episodes, though- but the good ones outweigh them in terms of volume and comedy. And if it weren’t for the Simpsons, there’d be no Comic Book Guy- a stereotype character both nerds and people who know nerds can relate to and laugh at equally. Who among us hasn’t met a CBG- or is one?
Monty Python, Star Trek, RHPS, Joss Whedon, The Simpsons, Doctor Who, and Anime.
I’d love to do Ren Faires and cosplay sometimes but I don’t have the time. I read both fanfic and wikipedia, but that doesn’t seem to count.
So it seems like I’m only really geeky in regards to film and television. I can live with that.
Monty Python, Star Trek (sort of), Wikipedia, Battlestar Galactica, Joss Whedon, Doctor Who, and Fanfic.
I’m… half a nerd? Yay?
Obsessed with:
Joss Whedon (Firefly only)
Enjoy:
Star Trek
Renaissance Faires
Wikipedia
Battlestar Galactica
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Joss Whedon (non-Firefly stuff)
The Simpsons
Frank Zappa
Myspace
So I’m not so much a nerd, as a nerd hanger-on.
Let’s see… Galactica and Joss Whedon, sure. I like the Simpsons, but I haven’t seen an episode since 2004 or so; I used to play Magic, but never obsessively (it was what we played when we couldn’t get enough people together t play D&D). Trek and Anime I can take in small doses, no more than that.
So I guess I’m not that much of a geek. Although, if Terry Pratchett or especially George R.R. Martin had been on that list, I might have given a different answer.
Why is Michael Jackson on that list?
Only thing I score on - vaguely - is Wikipedia. And not in the nitpicky discussion-board way, either. I sneak in anonymously, under cover of my megacorp ISP, and vandalize nerds’ Wikis on my favorite topics by throwing in little bits of better-written and -researched stuff than they care to put up. Then I come back later and see what they’ve taken down.
What, no love for Star Wars? If SW were on the list I’d be so there.
Other than that, not so much. The films/TV shows I appreciate but don’t obsess over (The Simpsons, Star Trek, Monty Python). I was obsessed with Rocky Horror 20 years ago, but grew out of that. I mostly ignore my MySpace account, and I haven’t even heard of some of the entries (Cosplay? Game show trade-taping?)
Doesn’t being a theater geek count for anything any more?
ETA: hey, guys, if you have ever edited a Wikipedia page you qualify as a nerd in my opinion. It never even occurred to me to do that.
I am pretty disappointed in myself for being such a poor nerd.
I am not obsessed with any of the things on the list. I would score about a 4 on a scale of 1-10 of “how much do you like this?” with 1 being “don’t know anything about it” and 10 being “obsessed” on the following topics…
Star Trek
RHPS
The Simpsons
Dr. Who
I read Wikipedia a lot (because it’s always, like, #1 in Google searches) and have MySpace and Facebook accounts but they only include IRL friends.
I do know more than I should about Python.
I suck at nerd
I actually hate most things on that list (Monty Python, Star Trek, Rocky Horror, fanfic, and most anime). I used to like The Simpsons, but I can count the times I’ve watched and enjoyed it this decade on my fingers, and now I have several Simpsons action figures I’d love to find a good new home for. The love affair is definitely over.
Meanwhile, I like Frank Zappa but wouldn’t call myself a huge fan. I use Myspace to keep in touch with my real-life friends in different cities, and only have two celebrities (Jenna Fischer and Warren Ellis) and a handful of musicians listed who I don’t know in real life. But I am a huge fan of Joss Whedon and his work, so that’s the only thing on the list I can call myself a true nerd over.
Python, Zappa and Simpsons (other than OJ). I’m not obsessed with any but these i like and am knowledgeable.
