Yup. I think we saw him try out for American Idol.
The woods are full of people like him (at least AI tryouts seem to indicate this)…self-deluded and/or attention whores.

I’m a bit disappointed that they didn’t show the choreography rounds this year. I know we’ll see the Vegas stuff, but I always like to see how the dancers react to learning stuff.
And yeah - “Sex” has been on American Idol auditions, and I think I caught him on some Bravo-TV stuff, but I don’t remember.
The guy’s a delusional idiot, badly in need of some psychoactive medication and a slap in the head. His mother should be charged with child abuse.
I disagree! For me, since he retained rhythm and musicality throughout, even when he was doing his demonstration of how far back he could go, it worked. Actually even more so than some of the contemporary solos from the top 20 last year - some were good, a lot were them flinging themselves about and showing their “passion” without real regard for the music.
An argument could be made that he didn’t use his whole body enough, but I was mesmerized! I especially like how he utilized his lack of a chin to add to his routine. I think he should probably have done the choreography, more for himself than for anything, but I ain’t mad at him.
Nigel said the reason why he went straight to Vegas: He doubts the competition is right for him but he wants him to get as much exposer as possible.
What did anyone think of the very first girl they on, that they put straight through to Vegas? She had multi-colored hair and did something contemporary, but her whole performance seemed not up to par to me and she just came across as passionless. Anyone else have a take on her? Perhaps I’m missing something.
And so far, I think I like the guy who did the routine to the spoken word monologue best. He looked like he did a fine job in the choreography round.
I’m not arguing that he wasn’t entertaining to watch, just that what he was doing doesn’t fall into what I consider “dancing”. Movement + rhythm, yes. But I have a hard time seeing someone go from that to, say, ballroom. Not to say that people can’t do both–clearly on the show we’ve seen that they can–but I don’t think that what he does is any indication of him having any more ability than Average Joe On The Street to do something like ballroom or the rest of the stuff they do on the show. (And I don’t really consider the ignoring-the-music, flailing contemporary routines to be much about dancing, either. I put both of these as performance art more than dancing.)
The first girl was “pretty good” to me, but not much more than that. I think she was a bit thrown off because they played the wrong music for her at first and she had that long, awkward part where she was just standing there. She might be really great, but that routine was only good for me.
Nope, that was my reaction, too. I was very surprised that they put her straight through to Vegas. I would have made her do the choreography. Then again, I don’t really have an eye for contemporary dancing.
IIRC, his name was William. It was an odd choice for an audition piece, but it was definitely good. I believe he got through to Vegas.
There were some terrible performances last night (Italian Guy, Tighty-Whitey Guy, and of course, Sex), but the one that stands out in my mind is “Gold Inferno.” He looked like a cross between a Mexican wrestler and a Power Ranger!
This was my first year watching AI and I got into that so I watched …Think You Can Dance last night and was kinda hooked into that as well. I have watched Ballroom Challenge* on PBS and I’m a little biased towards that genre, I really liked the two couples last night. The “popper” guy that was last pretty much blew my mind, that was great!
*Or whatever they call it.
Italian Guy was so freaking skeevy, I had trouble watching him. He just made me very, very uncomfortable! Tighty Whitey was less disturbing!
I love this show. I liked the poppers (though that creeps me out, I do find it amazing) and the couples that went through seemed promising. I don’t know what to think about “Sex” or the Gold Inferno!
I love this show. It tides me over between AI and football season.
The popper guy was amazing. I just couldn’t stop watching him, and the judges were having the same reaction. That whole routine he went through to pick up his ticket was hysterical. This show gives me more belly laughs in the audition rounds than AI by far–most of them from the GOOD dancers. Do you remember those two guys from last season who made up the swing routine in an hour and came back? Every time I watch that audition I giggle from the sheer exuberant joy of it.
I though Nigel’s comments to the Gold Inferno were pretty weird. He said that if the other judges hadn’t said no, he would have sent Gold Inferno straight to Vegas. I’m pretty sure he was joking, but he said it with a straight face and then send to cue the sad music. Not too classy.
I liked the shots of Gold Inferno afterwards. It felt like he were about to go completely postal.
Just a reminder: More dancing tonight!
Also Wednesday and Thursday…six hours in a week?? Isn’t that a bit excessive?
Many thanks, Starving! It’s not listed on FOX’s Web site, but the TV Guide Channel just confirmed that SYTYCD is on tonight’s schedule.
I’m thinking that this will be a replay of Thursday’s episode rather than a new set of auditions.
ETA: Whoops! Turns out I was looking at last week’s schedule. FOX will, in fact, be running the show on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week. Excuse me while I go call my mom …
Tonight is a rerun – but since I missed the first hour last Thursday, I’m there.
I watched some of last night’s rerun-- and I’m glad, because it meant I got to see Sex (or technically, his post-dance interview with the judges). Gold Inferno, Tighty Whitey Guy, the sight-challenged woman (and I liked the fact that the judges made such a point of her technical skills not being strong enough) and various others. It was interesting to me how many people were back for a 2nd or 3rd try–although I’m not sure why I should blame them for trying–how much time does it take to audition?
And that popper guy seemed to have joints I don’t (as well as a greater range of motion with joints we both have). Interesting to watch, but yeah, I’m not sure he’s a good fit for this compeition.
Ok folks, I’m watching right now.
There was a dancer, at about the 21 minute mark named something like Gev Manoukian. He was really good (apparently he was on last season).
What I NEED to know is what his music was. My wife and I were both in awe of the musical choice. He’s from Centerville, Utah.
Only the Dope can help me now…
That Kelly girl who was the daughter of the choreographer for High School Musical was GORGEOUS, and she had great lines, but she let her body momentum carry her out of step several times. She always recovered well, but that lack of control could end up biting her in the ass later.
I was going to give the show a try for the first time this season.
Got about halfway through the first episode before turning it off, this Mary person was so painfully annoying. Soon after, having context, I noticed her on a commercial or teaser for something else, and she made a point to let us know that her catch phrase is a high pitched squeal. Not teenage fangirl squeal. Car slamming on its brakes before an imminent crash squeal.
No thank you. The show may have been interesting enough to watch occasionally, but for that.
