Is anyone getting tired of the increasing self-congratulatory tone of this show? Especially from Nigel and how he is single handedly fixing the dance world and by extension the rest of the world? How long till we see this guy in a police line-up for forgetting that most 20 year old girls are not going to appreciate a pass from a lecherous old man?
Nice finale though, but I find the new electronic background to be distracting and sometimes it is hard to see the dancers.
The lighting for the Travis-choreographed piece got really distracting. There was so much fog, haze, and blue light I couldn’t tell what was going on there at the end.
I’m happy that Jeanine won, and Brandon was second (is there a prize for 2nd place?). I found it interesting that Kayla said, “We’re all winners” as she departed, and then later, Nigel said, “I won’t say you are all winners; that takes away from the actual winner.” I agreed with him, but it seemed a slight on Kayla, however intentional or unintentional.
I’m glad Evan didn’t win. He was cute and personable, but his talent definitely had a limit. Brandon and Jeanine were amazing. Well, Kayla was too, but I just didn’t connect to her the same way.
I was a little put off by the obvious Fame product placement. I hope it is not a sign of things to come (like, Ford Focus commercials). I also hope Katie Holmes will NOT be making a reappearance next season–that was just…odd.
Well, that background was unique to the Kodak theatre, so it’s not likely to be a regular feature (except for subsequent finales).
And the tone may be self-congratulatory, but I never get the sense that Nigel takes any personal credit for it–he’s always thanking the choreographers and guests and I feel he truly does see it as a large collaborative enterprise (though I, too, wish he would dial down the perv a bit).
Hard to complain since is is a movie about dancing featuring a SYTYCD alumni–not much different from the Hairspray plug a couple years ago. Pretty innocuous, IMHO.
I think this was the first time when I had no idea who would be winning, it could have gone either way. Yeah, Evan wouldn’t have deserved it, but I could see his voters voting for him despite such.
I’m sorry that the Wade Robson burglar dance didn’t make the cut, but since Brandon & Janette had two other dances last night, they probably wanted to spread the wealth a little. Still, I suspect those will be two very busy dancers when the group goes on tour.
I actually thought the burglar dance was one the highlights of the season. Incredibly fun, well animated, great charisma from both Jeanette and Brandon. Alas, that finale venue didn’t have stairs, did it?
I was also a big fan of the Crash test dummy routine. I don’t think that piece got quite the appreciation it deserved.
As far as all the Evan-hate: the people are voting for their favorite dancer, not the dancer they believe is the best dancer, so “deserve” isn’t really the right way to look at Evan winning or not.
Evan is a terrific dancer and he generates enormous affection and enjoyment in many people. If he had won, it would have been because he was the People’s favorite, and therefore it would have been deserved.
Home from vacation, and just about the first thing I’m doing on the Boards is checking this thread!
They could have built some.
Agree, that was the one piece I really would’ve liked to see again – my favorite from the season. Of course, it would have reminded everyone how much Janette deserved to be in the final four, so maybe that’s another reason to not do it.
Frankly, the choices of dances on Thursday seemed way arbitrary to me – like they chose the dances for whatever reason and then decided which judge got to pretend it was a favorite. Way too much ballroom – Louis Van Amstel had three of his numbers done? Really? Mm hm. (That frikkin’ waltz was nothing special.)
And, speaking of the stage – hated it. The camera people were way too far out for long stretches, and I couldn’t see what the hell was going on half the time. The pyrotechnics didn’t help. There’s a reason that dance isn’t usually performed in big venues, and this is why.
The other thing Thursday night I liked – when the panel of judges came out at the end of the Chorus Line number. I laughed (and had to try to explain why I was laughing to someone who happened to walk into the room at that particular moment).
Wednesday night, the local FOX station fucked up royally – they just kept running commercials and forgot to go back to the show – I only saw the last 10-15 seconds of Jeanine and Kayla’s number. Grr.
Agree with everyone who said that the “Nasty Boys” number was unfair to Evan – agree also that he didn’t deserve to win. Third place was a nod to his popularity – fourth would have been more accurate. He did develop over the season, to some extent – he wasn’t doing any lifts at all for the first three or four (or five?) weeks.
A good season, overall, despite my lack of passionate enthusiasm for any of the final four – hope they don’t overwork the franchise by starting another season in six weeks. (You know I’ll be watching it, though! :D) )
