So You Think You Can Dance -- SYTYCD -- Summer 2012

One week till the first show! Yay!

I know Adam Shankman judged some of the auditions, but am guessing he won’t be back as one of the permanent judges, since he will probably be doing promo for Rock of Ages this summer.

I personally liked the partnering with all-stars last year: does anyone know if they’ll be doing the same (or similar) this year?

Reminder for fellow fans – season starts tonight.

It’s on only once a week this year – no results show. Will they tell the person who’s eliminated before next week’s show so they don’t have to learn a new routine?

Yeah. The results will be recorded the week of and played later.

Looking forward to some good routines. The actual competition part of the show has been getting better each season.

That’s not what I heard.

Here’s an example of what Nigel says will happen:

On the first “live” week, all 20 finalists perform.

On the second week, all 20 will perform again, presumably keeping the same 10 couples together; after each couple dances, they will be told if they were in the bottom three from last week’s voting. At the end, the judges will make their eliminations. “Usually,” there will be no “dance for your life” solos, but it’s not being ruled out as an option (I am interpreting that as “we’ll do them if the show is running short that week”).

On the third week, the remaining 18 perform…and I just noticed something: either the eliminations have to be done by couples, which is not fair to the stronger dancer of a weak couple, or they’re going to have situations where a “bottom three” couple from the previous week is now split (for example, in week 2, couples X and Y dance, but then the man in X and the woman in Y are eliminated, so the ninth couple is now the woman in X and the man in Y - but they didn’t dance together, so how can anybody vote for them?).

I was bored with 20’s flapper girl’s story in the first minute. I love the dancing on this show, but each season I’m hating the introspectives more and more.

I enjoyed the autistic kid’s dancing more than I thought I would. That’s the kind of thing that gets me misty eyed.

I liked (not loved) the exorcist dancer’s routine, but I hate that Mary and her tears just played into his whole “my dancing will cleanse your soul” bullshit. Please, woman, control yourself. Don’t feed the kid’s delusions about his ability to “dance away our pain”, or whatever. And the fact that she was brought to tears over his melodramatic remove-my-beating-heart stuff at the end got me all rolley-eyed.

I can’t wait to see the guy dance with that giant hula-hoop!

Yeah, agree on exorcist. Unless … unless … he really does have spiritual powers, but you need to be in his physical presence to be cleansed of your sorrows.

Or not.

Whaddya think, is the SAHM going to make it past Vegas?

Probably not for the SAHM. Her daughter was cute but the routine went on too long. I wanted more bad dancing and less stupid commenting and backstories.

I liked the Tokyo drift B-boy. He had some neat stuff. I doubt he could get very far in choreography, what with the language issues.

Exorcism Man was creepy, over the top, and lame. I liked Zombie Bro better.

The guy with the ring was freaking amazing. I wish they hadn’t wasted valuable seconds showing reaction shots.

Dammit, I missed the first show. I’m taping it tonight though.

Holy crap, what was that red haired ballet dancer* thinking*? He was freaking amazing. He almost blew one of the greatest opportunities of his life.

My guess? Totally staged. He’s in a company and the producers know that. They know he can dance and they know he’ll make it to Vegas. So why not have some fun?

Totally agree that it was staged.

I loved the Ninja Twins- freaking hilarious. I was really hoping Nigel was going to say something like “as you know, there’s an age limit of 30 for this show. But I think we can agree to raise it just this one time to 32, because you two are terriffic!”

I know he wouldn’t, but I was still hoping he would.

I enjoyed the twin brothers too. I hope the exposure will help them in some way at least.

sigh, I love this show.

Maybe they’ll do a JC Penney commercial. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah. That was just beautiful. I’m sorry he didn’t make it past choreography but I watched his routine three times. Lovely, thoughtful, moving, fascinating true artistry. Like the best rythmic gymnastics routine ever thought up.

That routine with the ring was just stunningly beautiful.

I think that SYTYCD makes much better use of its audition weeks than American Idol does. Idol just shows snippets of the good singers, and indulges in making fun of a lot of the bad ones. Granted, SYTYCD does its share of making fun of the bad performers as well, but it also gets the chance to showcase some really wonderful talent in performers who aren’t well rounded enough to make it as serious contenders in the competition itself, which requires a performer with a pretty well-rounded background. For example, the red-headed Japanese guy was excellent as well, and I really enjoyed the 70’s Whacker guy, even though I don’t think either of them was able to make it past choreography. (I could be wrong about Whacker Dude, though — I don’t remember.)

I truly loved that ring performance, and wish that the producers would bring him back to do the guest performance on a later show.

That would work!

The ring dance was gorgeous. I would love to see him again too.

Pairing up the ring dance guy with the girl who pole danced and was in a Cirque de sole production might be a neat thing. Get Mia to choreograph and WOW!
