So You Think You Can Dance -- SYTYCD -- Summer 2012

The theme: “The Death Of My Father, done with poles and rings”.

I’d watch.

Poles and rings? Sounds like it’d be Oedipal. Er…Electral. I’d watch, too.

The hick who did hip-hop to James Brown was really entertaining.

I’m looking forward to it, but (not to be Debbie Downer or anything) I’m a little fearful that it’s going to be the “So You Think You Can Contemporary Dance (to horrible music)” like it was last season. MORE ballroom dancers darn it!!! More hip-hop dancers!!! Can we have a pop or broadway dancer please?

Enough of this 17 contemporary dancers and a mere token member each of some of the other genres.

Atlanta was actually one of the best audition cities in quite some time. There were no dancers I disliked, although some of the contemporary stuff gets a bit old. The three popping roommates were INCREDIBLE, the very self-aware hip-hopping redneck was adorable, and the belly-dancing girl was utterly gorgeous.

She’s hot, exotic, a beautiful dancer, and she loves bacon. Drool.

I agree. I do think there was a tap dancer who made it to Vegas and the guy who dance with the ballet company. I haven’t seen a single ballroom person make it yet.

I think the problem is, if you don’t do contemporary, there’s a very good chance the response will be along the lines of:
Nigel: “Well, you’re good at what you do, but I want to see if you can do more, so it’s ‘a yes to choreography’.”
Mary and whoever the other judge is that week: “I agree with Nigel.”
(I was surprised when Mary and Debbie “overruled” Nigel and sent somebody straight to Vegas.)
This doesn’t make for very good television if it happens too often.

Actually, I was surprised at how many hiphop dancers they sent straight to Vegas – ISTM that prior years they pretty much always went to choreography. Which makes sense, since so many of them are self-taught, and thus have little or no idea about any other style.

Especially the third one. Amazing! I’m surprised people are not talking about this more.

Lots of contemporary, sure, but Benji Schwimmer, who won Season Two, was swing/Latin, as was his sister Lacey (4th place the following season, and several seasons on DWTS).

Here’s a chartof top finishers – when you got to top ten, I think you’d see more ballet and ballroom.

ETA: Oops, are you talking about this season? Sorry, I misunderstood.

That said – there have been way more people going through who we haven’t really seen much of yet – they send 100, 150 to Vegas, right? And we’ve had closeups on maybe 20 or so, so far. So we don’t know genres of the vast majority.

Yeah, I was talking about this season. And it’s true, we aren’t seeing the people going through to choreography very much. Or at least not as much as I seem to remember seeing in previous seasons. It seems like, possibly in an effort to make it not drag out, nearly all of what they are showing us this season is the ones who do make it straight through to Vegas.

They’re definitely not showing a lot of bad auditions, for which, thanks.

Even those who are straight to Vegas, I don’t think we’re seeing everyone – mostly people with some sort of story or hook. Yeah, too many contemporary dancers, but I’m reasonably sure that’s not all that’s going through.

I totally agree, I’m so grateful they’re not showing very many of the bad dancers.

When they were showing their housemates, I noticed one was this guy. I really enjoyed them.

Happy now?

Mantis guy was cool – I definitely was not expecting it to be anything but bizarre. Which it was, but in a good way.

Ditto on surprise on the last guy – glad he got the response he did.

Looking forward to Vegas next week!

Nigel came off pretty pervy to Booby Teen Babe, the first girl. Mantis Guy was interesting. Too bad about Disowned Son. Adam was bleeped out a lot, who does he think he is, Sonja? Crump Girl would look so cool in a number with Twitch.

Nigel is a seriously pervy guy on a very regular basis. The comment about the guy’s nipples was … ew.

As always, I’m impressed by the manners of all the dancers and the audience.

Especially by how kind they were to the crazy space lady.
