Keep in mind that Nigel is the director of the audition episodes (although I’m not sure about Vegas Week). Any adverse reaction would almost certainly result in Nigel stopping the tape, a warning (if not an outright disqualification, and yes, Nigel has the authority to do that - the contract says that a contestant may be disqualified “for any reason or no reason whatsoever”), and either the audition would be restarted or simply not aired.
Also note that, for the broadcast, the music is probably “replayed” on a separate track (this also allows the music to be replaced for broadcast if it can’t be cleared), so any crowd reaction during a routine could be erased.
However, I think the main reason is, they’re all dancers - there’s probably a “but for the grace of God” and “judge not lest ye be judged” mentality involved.
I love Crump Girl. She seemed to be doing well in choreography too.
The fact that the judges tend to be so kind, and so unabashedly enthusiastic about dance, is what sets it apart from other reality shows, IMO. It just shines with heart and passion.
Yeah, they could do a full episode just of the “here’s your team, choreograph a dance for yourselves” segment, which never gets more than 5 or 10 minutes.
Good episode – I like the lack of soap-operaness in how they’re handling the preseason story. (Less so than previous years, or does it just feel that way to me?) “Okay, here’s someone we saw five minutes of in the original audition – they didn’t make it past this point – oh well.” This is some seriously good editing.
That said, I do not want to see another closeup of Alexa’s brimming eyeballs.
A lot of quitters! Some, I completely understand. Out of my element, need serious training, etc… Others are big drama queens.
And the reactions when getting cut are always interesting. From “I’ll be back next year, better!” to “They don’t know what they’re missing” and “Bleep this bleepin show and bleep Nigel and his bleepin bleep bleep!”
I didn’t liike the flapper girl at first, but now I hope she makes it to the top 20. She’s a beautiful dancer, but I also love the color of her skin. Pale girls represent!
We are also seriously rooting for Dragon House boy. He has had the best attitude out of anyone I think I’ve ever seen on this show. The way he has committed himself to learning despite the difficulty and unfamiliarity is inspiring. And I loved his comment - something like ‘‘Apparently there’s a whole new level of hard that I haven’t been working, so I’m going to figure out a way to get there.’’
We like Alexa too. She’s demonstrated that she can take critique and learn from it.
I’m also reconsidering flapper girl – still think she’s a little too into herself, but would be curious to see how she did if she made it to the top 20, so I hope she does.
I was disappointed they cut the krumper girl - she definitely brought something different to the table AND she seemed to be handling the contemporary just fine. Flapper girl’s hair annoys me so much I can barely stand to watch her.
Considering that two of the “specialty” dancers that got sent through to Vegas dropped out the minute they realized they couldn’t pick up others’ choreography, I expect very few hip-hoppers to be sent through to Vegas in future seasons (and yes, I expect there to be “future seasons” - this is one of Fox’s highest-rated summer shows.)
I’ve said this everywhere else, so I might as well say it here: why do I have the feeling the last two dancers “competing” for the final spot will be the two ballroom roommate girls? (And one of these seasons, this is going to backfire on them, when one of the top 20 gets disqualified just before the “live” shows begin and ends up being replaced by someone who wasn’t the last person cut. This nearly happened in, I think, Season 3, but they had time to record a new scene with the first male alternate being told that he had made it, and when they aired a group shot of the top 20 that included the disqualified dancer and left out the alternate, they pretended that the goof never happened.)
I’m still wondering how they are going to handle early eliminations. Why do I have the feeling they’re going to end up eliminating couples this year, rather than splitting them up and then wondering how anybody can vote for the new couple created from the “survivors”?
After the announcement of the Top 20 next week, there will be a week off (I assume they figure that too many people will be out watching fireworks rather than home watching the show and then voting).
On 7/11, the top 20 dancers compete as couples. Remember, there is no “results show” each week this year.
On 7/18, the top 20 dancers compete again, but after each dance, they will be told if they were in the bottom three in the previous week’s voting. Supposedly, the judges will use that night’s routine in place of the “dance for your life” solos to eliminate two dancers, although they do have the option to make one or more dancers do a solo anyway. They have not said whether or not the two dancers eliminated each week would always be
Once they get down to the last 10, the all-stars will return.
Note that, according to TheFutonCritic, there will also be no new episodes in the two weeks that NBC is airing the Olympics; because of this, and the fact that The X Factor has to start on 9/12 in order to finish on time, the last two SYTYCD episodes will be on Tuesday 9/11 and 9/18.
Don’t forget the other big change this year: there will be two winners, one male and one female.
I agree. And, she had such a gorgeous figure after she took off her baggy crumper clothes, I was hoping to see more of her. She looked like she might have been a gymnast.
I wanted Alexa kicked off. I get that she’s a good dancer and she very nearly made it this time, but like Adam said, they’ve been carrying her, letting her slide on her lack of personality nearly all of Vegas. There are so many other dancers with personality that I didn’t think they should be letting her slide all this time just because she “almost” made it last time.
