I loved the rhythmic gymnast - wow. I didn’t know you could even DO that. I wonder about her, though - three stress fractures in your feet so you can’t go to the Olympics, but a dance contest is okay?
I’m still brooding about Mary Murphy (esp. since I missed last Thursday so I’m just now settling in for the season). Was it just a matter of keeping the show fresh? Was the bitching from those of us who loathed her shtick a factor? Hard to imagine she would have quit the gig, but I guess that’s a possibility as well.
Has anyone been able to find anything? Five minutes of googling this morning didn’t yield anything but a little speculation for me.
I don’t think she’s completely out. After last night’s show they showed previews of Vegas Week and she was judging.
I was touched by the twin dancing for his brother with spina bifida. He has a snowball’s chance in hell getting through Vegas, but it was a moving story. And I generally hate the stories behind the dancers.
Me too. And her endless bursts of screaming.
I was really digging on Toni Whatshername, until she started choreographing. What a bitch.
Great to see the two guys – Billy Bell and that amazing freakin’ ballet dancer whose name I can’t think of – who got the free pass to Vegas. Definitely hoping the latter makes it to the top ten, and don’t hate the former.
Ten. Damn, that’s a short list. OTOH, 11-20, or at least 15-20, has included a fair amount of cannon fodder in previous seasons, and if they’re getting rid of one a week, not two, it’s not going to shorten the season.
Do we have any info yet on who the returnees are?
They’ve shown the full list in promos, and I think even on the show, and it’s on wiki, but I’ll spoiler it just in case
Twitch, Kathryn, Allison, Anya, Pasha, Lauren, Neil, Dominic, Comfort, Courtney, Mark, and Ade.
Not sure why there are 12 and not 10. backups, perhaps?
After DVR fail for various reasons, I finally watched last night. Hooray! I’m SO glad they got Marge Simpson to undo her ridiculously unattractive bobble-bun and dance with her hair down. I still think she’s kind of awkward to watch–she’s all bones and tendons and not feminine–but so much better than with that dumb hair.
I did not get the deal with the tap dancer. She seemed very intelligent, had charisma, skill and originality and what – Nigel thought she disrespected the musical artist? By displaying her own rendition? They seemed perfectly fine with that gymnast doing ironic backflips to Marvin Gaye, but anything with actual thought to it is faux pas. It seemed Nigel was the only thing standing in the way of her going straight to Vegas.
I totally didn’t get the love for anorexic Marge Simpson during her audition. Seriously? “The type of dancer you see only once in 100 years”? I thought she looked sort of awkward.
I also liked what the tap dancer did with the music — and I’m normally not that big a fan of tap. I felt like she was improvising a percussion line to the piece while performing the dance. I though it added to the music, rather than taking away from it.
Love Billy Bell, and I’m glad to see him back — and also the returning ballet dancing guy. I imagine the other guys are all groaning inwardly at seeing them back in the competition pool, though.
Side Point - they’ve pulled down all of Philip Chbeeb’s videos, username “pacman”, on Youtube. I think this means he’s going to be on the show again.
Sweeeeeeeet!
I wish they’d show more of the results of the self-choreographed numbers; those are often interesting. Or at least bad in amusing ways.
The “going to visit people” thing didn’t work – they can skip that next time. (Funny that Nigel got a ticket, though.)
Looks like there are some really strong dancers in the top 10 – er, 11. I look forward to a great season!
The whole speeding ticket thing- I’m dubious. Mary and Toni & whomever get chauffeured limousines and Nigel, the executive producer, drives himself? Makes for an amusing bit, but I dunno. Hm.
I also wish they’d show more of the whole group of 3 dancers during their final choreographed piece- during Ana’s dance, for instance, she’s the only one we saw. Hello, there were two more dancers on the stage- it would be nice to see them too.
It’s funny how they said the girl who quit was a waste of money. I can’t imagine how much money and resources were wasted traveling to the contestants’ home just to tell them they didn’t make it.
I’m also over that whole, “you didn’t make it, OK you did” thing they like to do.
Heh. What is the carbon footprint of SYTYCD?
The girl who quit, Ida Saki, won a Presidential arts scholarship or something right after she was picked for Vegas. I don’t know where the TWoPers are getting the story from, but apparently she actually told the producers that she couldn’t make it (she’s performing at the Smithsonian christ’s sake) and they told her not to worry about it and that they’d “figure it out”. Apparently, once she got there they told her that it couldn’t be worked out, so she had to throw all the rounds and then be browbeaten by Nigel before she was allowed to leave.
Looks like Alex Wong is this year’s Danny. I forget that to have personality on this show you have to cross your eyes and stick your tongue out at the camera before Nigel thinks you’re zany and personable.
I love Alex and am so glad he made it through.
We were also cheering when Lauren, Jose, Melinda and Kent made the top 11.
I despised the ‘go to their homes’ crap. Although Lil’ C getting that car that was “harshing his swagger” (or some such) was highly amusing. And don’t get me started on “you are the 11th of 10!”
And I still want to slap both Mia and Mary.
