I thought about this one day, and when you buy those bulk packs of socks, they cost about a buck a pair. I used to wear my socks till they were holy, then patch up the holes and keep wearing them until they were threadbare, but that revelation has freed me to wear them a reasonable length of time, and just throw them the hell out. I’m liberated, baby!
The socks I bought were $8 for 12.
Great deal.
Ever have your mom have habits that seemed valid to you in the bubble of you home life, but then have the outside world look at you funny? Mom had us put bread bags over our socks and then put on our rain or winter pull-on boots. The bags made them easier to pull off. This was lost on the other kids who gave us the stink-eye.
$13 a pair? $13 a pair? I have *shoes *I didn’t pay $13 for.
Oh, as to the OP - don’t wash them. I don’t even wash my underwear fresh from the packet. Everything loses that softness after the first wash.
Same here. I can’t imagine getting $12 benefit from any pair of socks no matter how fancy.
I bet they drink Evian, too.
I have a friend who actually does this. Well, almost. He wears them until they start getting a hole in the heel, then he turns them over so the worn spot is in front, where it hardly gets any wear at all. So his socks do actually last twice as long.
Personally, though, I don’t think they’re very comfortable that way, so when mine get a heel-hole, I give them to my mom for use for rug weft, and get new ones. Incidentally, old socks make very nice rugs.
Slightly? :dubious:
Wash, then wear. Who knows how clean the sock smithy was, or what chemicals they still bear from environmentally unsound Third World cotton fields?
Yeah, he’s a sock freak, alright. They don’t even look comfortable. I do the laundry, and they’re not soft and cushy. But he’s had some foot problems and he seems to think this helps. There’s no talking to him. These are his favorites, but we found them a bit cheaper on another site: Smartwool® - Merino Wool Outdoor Clothing, Socks & Accessories
What, not even at the gym? That’s where I wear mine. Then I take them off and replace them with regular black socks to go home.
I buy McGregor Happyfoot socks. They last decently long and are very comfortable.
No, no. Multicoloured felt sandal socks are for sandals. At least among the hikers at Mountain Equipment Co-op.
But doesn’t that mean that the holes will be pointing inwards from some unknown dimension instead of outwards from your foot? Whenn they’re pointing outward, sweat can escape. When they’re pointing inward, who knows what will cozy up to your foot?
Yup. That was usually reserved for when the rubber boots got a hole and we couldn’t afford new ones yet. Gee, wonder where I got my fiscally conservative habits from?
