I’m a sock and sandal wearer. Yes I admit to this atrocity. I love it. Its the most comfortable combo LPC’s (leather personnel carrier) I’ve ever worn. I catch a lot of crap for doing it but I don’t care. I’m wearing them now, and will continue to where them through out the summer. Leather sandals and bare feet = leather sandals and sweaty nasty bare feet. Socks and sandals = bliss, that’s a fact…I swear :D. I’m guilty of this occasionally. I practically live in my Birkenstocks outside of work, and if it’s cold… well, nothing stops me from putting on a pair of socks with them. My mom just sighs and shakes her head; my boyfriend thinks I’m just plain weird. What can I say? I’ve been a girl with not a whole lotta fashion sense all my life.
Wearing any kind of shoes you cannot wash without socks is just plain unhygienic. I would only wear without socks any shoes I could wash in the washer.
Anything that you wear next to your skin needs to be washed, more so if it’s feet or other areas prone to sweat.
I knew a woman who wore sandals without socks and the smell was not exactly pleasing. We discussed the issue and came to the conclusion that for her, fashion came first while for me hygiene came before fashion…

socks with sandals are ok if you are wearing pants. In the winter. and you have nifty socks.
I have been doing this for years. I see a few people in the Bay Area who do it, too. I went back to NY to visit a few years back, and they thought it was funny.
I love to put on a nice pair of thick socks, then slip into my Birk’s and go for a walk.

Thick socks in Birkenstocks was practically the preppy uniform at my high school. I suppose their coolness (or uncoolness) factor depends upon your clique. 
The socks were not usually worn during the summer months, though. And always with pants–never with shorts or a skirt. I’ve tried it, and it’s great in the fall and early spring.
I’ve been seeing those rainbow colored socks with the individual toes in stores a lot recently…how else would you show them off?
Socks with dress sandals would be a dubious idea, though, IMO.
Just wait. George Clooney will be photographed at some premiere doing it, and soon all y’all will be doing it. The New York Times Sunday magazine will have a spread about it. Wafer-thin models in Vogue will be sporting knee-length models in the latest colors (with quotes like “Cotton is the new Leather!”) and Cosmo will devote two pages to the proper use and abuse of tube socks with a cover line like “Tube Meat! 69 Styles That Will Drive Your Man To His Knees!”
