Sodom and Gomorrah: the Movie

IMO that site relies far too much on other writings and commentaries. So Josephus thought the line meant angels. This does not prove that this is the correct interpretation.

The page also gives text as “giants were in the earth in those days”. The page goes on to deal with possible etymology and meaning of Nephilim. AFAIK the word is never defined in the Torah. It is incorrect to translate as giants. “The Nephilim were in the earth in those days” is the proper English text.

Hmmm…well, but it seems to be saying that the phrase in Genesis 6 is beney ha’elohim, and is used in the OT exclusively to refer to angel not humans. Is that not correct?

Not to mention there seem to be other references to angels fornicating elsewhere in the OT which seems to refer to Gen 6. Of course that doesn’t mean that’s what the Genesis author had in mind but, hey…

I don’t know. I felt that was the one good argument the site had, but I have no idea if it’s true.

Where? OTTOMH I can’t recall any.

Er, well…now I note what I was thinking of, including the verse I quoted above, are NT :smack: .

Still, I think the quotes from Enoch and Jubillee establish that it’s an older (pre Christian anyway) idea, even if they’re not canon. Of course that doesn’t mean that was the idea of the original author. I don’t know…I’ll have to wait till an angel comes on to me.

I don’t get it.

This film is about a married man who has an affair who another guy. I don’t think anyone is going to argue that affairs which destroy marriages are good…no matter the gender of the third party. Making it “another man” instead of “another woman” doesn’t change anything. People get hurt when you break promises and betray their trust, it really doesn’t matter who it’s with.

Brokeback Mountain is about two men who fall in love, but due to the stigma attached to being gay, feel they have no choice but to marry women and hide their true feelings.

The two scenarios are not comaparable- because if there was no stigma attached to being two cowboys in love Ennis and Jack could have settled down to a nice life together and there would have been no wives or kids to get hurt. It was the fact that this option didn’t seem possible to either of them that the rest of the story happened.

In the end what matters is being true to yourself, not living a lie, and not making promises you can’t (or won’t) keep.

I agree completely. I think the film will be making the argument that The Gay is a hideous disease. The man was happilly married. But, he was infected with The Gay. The vile illness makes him turn his back on his wife, his family, and even his Saviour. This man would never allow lust for another woman to turn him away from his wife and the sacred vows he made to her. But, that unnatural sickness The Gay, has devoured him and destroyed the lives of everyone he once loved.

I think it makes a difference. If a wife finds out her husband is having an affair with another woman, it just means he’s a horny, roving, cheating bastard – but all women understand that all men have something of that in them; it’s a calculated risk you take when you get married. But if she finds out her husband is having an affair with a man – it’s like, he’s not the man she thought she married at all, their whole marriage is built on a lie, she’s been a total idiot all these years, pass the sleeping pills!

BrainGlutton I don’t think most women can brush of her husband’s affairs that lightly.

It is certainly not a calculated risk I took that my husband would sleep around. We made vows, I wouldn’t marry someone who couldn’t keep a promise.

If my husband slept with anyone else, he wouldn’t be the man I thought he was, full-stop.

Tell me about it: “King James didn’t write the King James bible; Martin Luther did!” I felt like signing up just to yell, “Cite!” at everyone.

Note to Mods: last statement was purely hyperbolic. Better things to do with time. No intention of starting Board War.

Why is anal intercourse referred to as sodomy?

Coz it’s a lot easier to say than gomorrahy.

That was King David, who coveted Bathsheba and so sent Uriah off to die in battle so he could have her: a rotten trick, even for the Old Testament.

Oh, for pete’s sake - how long do we have to keep fighting this ignorance? It’s TEH Gay!

(Good one, mellivora.)

An older thread on the topic.

And David was one of good guys!

:stuck_out_tongue:

WOW - I didnt even know this was here. Its 2011 and only now I looked. Oh well. Thank for all the comments… I havent read them all but some made me blush.

would love to chat to some of you who showed interest!!

Have a good one !

A Filactou

It is hard to have a good one when we expected to see confirmation that this movie was not just a fake preview. :smack:

Zombie [del]movies[/del] threads with no updates are not my cup of tea.

But just to help those wondering, at least several searches at the IMDB show that no movie was made with this title on recent years and none on 2005, 2006 or 2007.

You’re this fellow, I reckon:

However, the CastingCallPro website of one (very cute, btw) actor named Anastasios Filactou does list Sodom and Gomorrah by New Fire Films as a 2005 film credit.

So, Anastasios F, how was the filming and where’s the movie? And oh yeah, welcome to the Straight Dope!

In preview: Hey, that link for New Fire Films says that post-production on S&G is “nearly complete”. Apparently there is a trailer online, but I didn’t click; some braver soul will have to report back.

Unless you have some player that can operate a .mov file, forget it (Windows Media Player doesn’t, and I’m not about to download the file).

Well, you have not heard of “fake trailers” before? (warning, TV Tropes link, you may not come back)

I think Poe’s law could be involved, but when the news section in the New fire films site consists of just a single blog post (their own, it seems) from 2007 and nothing more, I have to say the effort fizzled or it was a real trailer, fake movie.

kaylasdad99 the trailer is linked to in the New Fire Films site that Kimsu linked to.
