Soldier of Fortune 2

First off, let me say I love this game. It, along with Postal 2, was the thing that finally nudged me into getting that GeForce 4 and 1/2 Gig of RAM. I heartily recommend it to anyone who likes all-action military games (with a soupcon of strategy). The violence level is pretty amazing, though.

All that said, it is pretty difficult. I’ve been playing fps’s for years now (way back to Wolfenstein - the original!) and consider myself pretty experienced but I’m having trouble playing SOF 2 “right”. I’ve completed a few missions by charging in, Rambo style, on the lower difficult levels and spraying automatic fire in all directions (oops…he was on my side…next time get out of the fuggin way!) I have a feeling I could complete the whole game this way (even with limited saves) but it seems a cheesy way to do it, and I want to learn to use all the cool weapons properly.

Can anyone suggest some recommended key configurations? From my playtime so far, it seems that only a handful of the myriad keys are really necessary (move, lean, crouch, shoot, alternative fire). Does anyone really use those “select best safe weapon”, etc. keys? When you add all those in, together with “special weapon 1&2” and “alternative mode 1&2”, you need to be an octopus to control the thing.

What I find happens is, I start sneaking up on the enemy encampment. If I crouch or crawl, the guy moves so slow I never seem to get anywhere, but if I run, he makes noise and gets spotted. I can never find the keys in time to switch to the right weapon - I end up sort of wandering in with the sniper rifle, switching back and forth between zoom and non-zoom.

For example - to use the grenades, you have to first switch to them, then lob the grenade - by that time, I find the target has dashed up to me and is mowing me down while the grenade explodes 100ft behind him.

Excuse the meandering stream-of-consciousness style…I must still be pumped

Tips anyone?!

This game pissed me off. The graphics were pretty good, but the gameplay was just too unrealistic after coming from Ghost Recon. I think the day I un installed the thing was after I was standing toe to toe against my buddy while I was unloading shot after shot from an assault shotgun and he wouldn’t go down, so he throws his knife at me and I die.

I liked the grass effects though.

Anybody know how this game compares to Operation Flashpoint?

Sorry, no idea. Perhaps you can download a demo to try both?

I agree with the “less realistic than Ghost Recon” comment - I tried that one, and didn’t last more than a few minutes. Just like I would be in a real battle situation, I suspect. After a lot of practice I completed a couple of missions of GR. Sometimes, though, I just want a mindless slug-fest - realism can get in the way of fun! (At the other extreme is Serious Sam - forget realism, let’s party!)

Surprised there aren’t more responses to this - perhaps SOF 2 isn’t as popular as I thought it would be.

Wasn’t the major “Selling Point” of this game the gore factor? Like you could shoot peoples arms and legs off and stuff.
