Somalia (that fly blown, dirty hellhole) wants to have peace! They are looking for foreign countries to put down the warlords.is anyone interested?
Lets see how many Muslim countries take up the request?
Personally, I would not set foot in this place!
And the proposition you want to debate is what, now?
I was reading this weekend that on a recent vist to Ireland Kofi Annan talked about the possibility of Irish troops going. Early days so we’ll see. He also broached the possibility of Irish troops as part of a international peace keeping force in Iraq in the future. All this has to be under a UN mandate for us to have anything to do with it. We’re sent our troops to many a shitehole around the world eg. Congo, Lebanon and East Timor so the place won’t put us off. If there is a UN mandated force I could well see us being a (small*) part of it.
Our parliament is going to debate it shortly according to the paper I was reading.
- We don’t have a very big standing army.
Why do you mention Muslims?
Are you not aware that there is a saintly man who defends the rights of downtrodden civilians?
A righteous man who will not let evil dictators terrorise their populations.
A powerful man who needs no help from anyone else to provide overwhelming force.
A determined man who needs no permission from anyone else to invade to save lives.
A deeply thoughtful man who will do anything necessary to bring democracy to these suffering places.
A charismatic man who will appear on a warship under a triumphant banner…
P.S. Just tell this man there is oil in Somalia!
BTW of the top of my head I know that there were Pakistani troops there the last time. In fact this Muslim cures along with Canadians where involved in the relief of the US troops that got into a world of shit.
My point was, in he 10 years since the last disaster (the slaughter of the Pakistani and American troops), probably tons of weapons have flowed into Somalia. The warlords hold sway, so any attempt to enforce peace will probably be pretty dangerous. I don’t see a lot of volunteers for this type of work…who will wind up doing it?
The people who love peace and will stop at nothing to fight terrorists who use methods of terror to rule over other people. Duh.
No, wait, we’re just using that as a pretense. Nevermind.
Are you sure that’s what your point was?
The United States isn’t the worlds policeman, only when it suits them, but thats ok because economic and military empire have been doing that since the beginning of time.
There’s been rape, murder and gangsta rap since the beginning of time. That doesn’t make them ok.
Wouldn’t be surprising. Pakistan supplies more UN peacekeepers than any other country.
I am sure the Somali people are really disappointed.
Well, having a stable Somali government would greatly suit the US and it’s fight against anti-US terrorism in East Africa.
First: It would also greatly suit the US to secure an area of the world where al-Qaeda has had known bases and training camps.
Second: It might also be good for any US diplomats or other citizens who are working in various US embassies in the area (like for instance Nairobi and Dar es Selaam).
Third: It would also supply some help for the 1800 US troops currently stationed in tiny neighbouring Djibouti who are there for the sole purpose of fighting terrorism in East Africa and protecting US interests in the region.
Fourth: Going the extra mile and sending some US peacekeepers would do a lot of help America’s piss poor reputation in the world. It might even help close a chapter of history of non-US involvement in Africa, a policy that started with Somalia, carried through Rwanda/Congo/Sudan and now can end in Somalia.
This single gesture would also have the added bonus of healing the past wounds that Americans carry to this day about what happened in Mogadishu in 1991, by having a small part in setting up a stable central government in Somalia.
But I am dreaming and not holding my breath, at least with this administration in power.
Exactly HOW does one go about setting up a stable government in a place like Somalia? Warlords rule the place…there isn’rt any foreign investment becuase there are no resources. There isn’t any government because the warlords won’t permit it.
I’m quite serious…why doesn’t an oil-rich islamic country (like SA or Oman) step in and help? I cannot see an impoverished nation like Pakistan doing much…why don’t the Saudis help their fellow muslims?
Racism, greed, apathy? The usual reasons I expect. Why do you hold Saudi Arabia, a country I suspect you hold in low regard, to a higher standard than you do your own government? Your government could help your fellow Christians in Haiti, Liberia or the Philippines but doesn’t.
Rather than worry about why the Saudis don’t help, your government will have to deal with the results when al Qaeda linked charities and madrassas do.
Not entirely true. Coca-Cola returned to the country a few months ago. But whether that’s a good sign is another debate…
It’s when Pepsi wants in that you need to worry.
What are you talking about? This isn’t a Christian country. Any attempt to make it so results in lawsuits out the wazoo.
The demographics, coinage, key members of the administration, Supreme Court, various Congress members, top military brass and many Americans would disagree. The doctrine of separation of church and state mean only as much as the people want it to. Lawsuit shooting wazoos notwithstanding.
