I’ve seen in some books that the first pages (those that contain the preface or table of contents) are numbered in roman numerals and the main pages of the book have normal numerals. How can I do that in MS Office 2003?
Also, how can I change the format of the endnotes? I would like them like this: [1], but office makes them like this [sup]1[/sup]
I use Word 2000 and XP, but I’m guessing it’s similar.
It’s a function of “Sections” and the page number field code.
Each “Section” of a document can have it’s own page numbering, which can be a different style than the previous section, or continue with no change.
So you type the preface or TOC (or use Word’s built in TOC functions to create one), then start a new section for the main body of the document. To do this select Insert|break and select one of the section break types to start the new section.
Once you have the two sections, go to the first page of each section and insert a Page Number field code. To do this, select Insert|PageNumbers and choose where you want the numbers to appear, then click the “Format” button. On that window, you can choose the type of numbering, such as Roman Numerals, etc., and whether you want the number to begin again at page 1 for that section, or continue counting from the last page of the previous section.
As I said, that is how it’s done in Word 2000. I’m hoping it’s not too different in Word 2003.
