This is SO weird. I have a Geocities site. I’ve had it for a few years. I haven’t updated it recently, though. I just looked at it, and on Internet Explorer (on the Mac, anyway) a bunch of porn pages pop up! You know, the kind that pop up and won’t go away, no matter how hard you try to click them all away. WHAT IS THIS!?!?!? I did NOT do that. When I look on IE with my PC on my site, a weird script wants to pop up, and then a javascript error. Nothing happens in Netscape, though, on either Mac or PC.
Was there some sort of hacking problem with Geocities that I didn’t hear about? What the hell is this? I leave my Geocities site alone for a while, and I come back to find THIS?!? What have my web page guests thought when they come to my site and are subjected to porn? (No cracks please - my site is a nice little modest effort with pictures of Yosemite, etc.)
I went in and edited out some weird script on the offending web page. It took away the Geocities banner, but it also took away the pop-up thing that should NOT be there.
I’ve heard of this (if it’s the same thing). It’s online graffiti, just defacing someome’s web pages. I haven’t really looked into it but apparently it is on the increase and there are various ways people can hack into your site.
**Eutychus55 and UncleBeer ** - I just looked more closely at the second link above and noticed the word “cracks” at the bottom of the page. Hmmm, no idea on STMB policy but you might want to make sure there are no infringements.
Very sorry, I had no idea (but I should have checked). Apologies.
