When I got home from work today, my sister asked me to look at today’s Arlo and Janis comic. “I can’t figure out what this means!” she said. I couldn’t either. Help, anyone? The punchline is, “It’s a middle-aged guy thing,” so opinions from middle-aged guys would be especially helpful.
I’d say he’s getting up to go to the bathroom a lot at night maybe?
That was my first guess–his prostate is acting up.
I guess he has to go to the bathroom so much, he’s marking it.
I have no idea why he’s marking it though.
I think it’s so he can fret over it. “Can’t sleep through the night anymore, getting old.” Angst, angst, angst.
Dunno. I’m a middle aged guy and I don’t get it either.
Bathroom trips – there’s a great line by Henry Blake in which he says something like: “I’m thinking of moving my tent closer to the latrine to cut down on the mileage at night”
You get old, bad things happen.
Alright, I’ll just chuck it up as an obtuse and not-very-funny comic, then. Thanks for your help.
OK, it may not be that funny, but if you’re a middle-aged guy, it’s not that obtuse. You spend a lot of time thinking about the enemy that your prostate has become. (And the question that your doctor always asks at your check-up about how many times you get up at night to go to the bathroom.)
Ohh. Well, that certainly does help explain it, and why he’s marking it down.
Forty years ago I heard the following story: Two men made a bet about who could make love to their wives the most times in one night. The first man went home, made love to his wife and put a mark on the wall next to the bed. He made love to her a second time and put a second mark next to the first one. Then he made love to her again and put a third mark next to the first two. Then he went to sleep. The next morning the second man came over to the first man’s house where the first man was still in bed. When he was asked “How many times did you do it?”, the first man pointed at the three marks. The second man then said “Damn, 111! You beat me by 4.”
