Someone who won't get out of the way.

The instant the vehicle touched him it was assault with a deadly weapon. The driver should have waited short of hitting him, until he gave up and went back to his next work task.

It was om the street, pretty near wher the shuttles picked up for the ACL music festival last year. These spots were definately not reserved. The guy didn’t have the air of someone who knew he was in the right. I suspect he left because his boss told him to.
BTW, the shuttle system, and the whole fest was one of the bes run I’ve ever seen. And the city and it’s people were as nice as pie.
My only complaint, and it’s a biggie, is that didn’t provide any real shade. People were crowded under the scant trees like cows in the summertime Bakersfield.
I almost died of the heat, but I loved my visit. Austin is somehow different for me from the rest of Texas.
I’m blabbing.

To be truthful, I’m not sure the car was really touching him, but it was close. I was across the street, quietly observing.

I gotta say, I do feel for the guy. I’ve had thankless, shitty, underpaid jobs where everybody takes their ire out on you cause you’re right there and an easy target.
But he was, nevertheless, being an asshole. Been one myself. 'Till I got rich. :stuck_out_tongue:

I saw something similar last weekend at the museum.

A guy in scrubs jumped out of the passenger side of a car to “hold” a parking spot with his body. The lady who was next up for the spot attempted to park in the spot and the stand off began. She slowly crept forward, he put his hands on the car to block it or even push her back (like that would work).

It ended when the traffic was at a complete standstill and horribly backed up, and about 15 minutes later when a security guard ran the guy off. He was waving his arms and trying to tell security that his car was ‘just over there’- way at the end of the traffic jam they created.

Paid parking was within sight- it only costs $5.00.

I’m going to assume that this happened in a location where the valet service commandeers parking spaces for their use. I assume that because I live in a city and the valet services just use curb space.

The curb space belongs to the city and therefore the public. Therefore anyone should be able to park there. My city (Philadelphia) tolerates the valet service because restaurants are a big draw in Philly. But I doubt there’s anything on the books granting the valets exclusive use of specific parking spots.

But I think you’d need brass ones to poach a space from a valet service.

ETA what CWThree said

Huh, didn’t they pick up from big parking garages up kinda near the Capitol? Although if you’re not from Austin, you probably don’t know that exactly. I can’t think of what the valet would be parking for up there.

Anyway, if the valet hasn’t leased the spot and marked it with a bag, citizens totally and legally have a right to park there. Austin is very citizen oriented (almost too citizen oriented, it can be tough to get stuff done as a few NIMBYs can derail an entire project) and would take a complaint that the valets were blocking people from parking very seriously. (and I’d say I’d start with the city traffic engineers because I happen to work with the traffic engineer for downtown on a regular basis)

Yep, Austin is the best city in the world. It does get hot though. You should’ve been at ACL a couple of years ago when it was so dry there were huge clouds of dust. Always bring sunscreed and wear a hat.

Good! Hey everyone - I got dibs on Ludy’s parking spot! :stuck_out_tongue:

Mountie Captain: I do not approve of your methods!
Ness: Yeah, well…You’re not from Chicago.Stranger

I’ve ploughed through a mob of university students with my car.

But let me explain this a little. I wasn’t flying through like a good ol’ boy screaming “get a job, hippies” (though that was tempting). There was a zebra crossing on a small street by the uni. There would have literally been over a thousand students. Maybe two thousand. All I know was some big event must just have finished, because there was a human snake of the little arseholes without visible beginning or end. I have no idea how many there actually were, or how long I would have been there. Now in situations like this, there is usually a moment here and there where some decent, considerate people in the crowd will take it upon themselves to stop the flow momentarily and let a few cars through before they start up again. Not here. After a few minutes, I just leaned on the horn and went through at a slow but steady crawl. I made a point not to engage eye contact with any individual (but I was watching their bodies to make sure I didn’t hit them). They scattered.
