Am I the only one who thought of the ending of the original Planet of the Apes movie upon seeing the beginning of the video?
Upon seeing the moving bodies of light at the beginning, my reaction wasn’t “Lo! Witness the holy blessings of the Touch of God!”; it was “this singer is going to have one heck of a sunburn under that solar flare”, followed by “This singer is being invaded by alien brain twisters”.
After seeing the angel shapes, the imagery made more sense. Is this kind of imagery common in the US? Is it perceived as being exclusively ‘Christian’ ?
As a non-US type, I don’t have the resonances with the nationalistic imagery that some might. But I can easily imagine the Evil Twin of the video created in some unfriendly-to-the-US place…
Quite possibly the best evidence to date why someone needs to develop one of those “flashy things” from MIB. I need to have those last 5 minutes erased…permanently.
Wow, that’s really horrifying. Who is he supposed to be, anyway? A dead firefighter/soldier type? The spirit of '76? What?
My favorite part was the flag ocean. Bleah.
To sunspace: I dunno, I wouldn’t really call it Christian exactly. Glurge for a specific subset of the population, in a spectrum from only nominally Christian/general spirituality through some evangelicals. If that makes any sense. I mean, a lot of Christians would be completely turned off, while some people who aren’t necessarily Christian might really like it. Like that TV show a few years ago, Touched by an angel, which was hugely popular but not specifically Christian, or Highway to Heaven in the 80’s, which was the same–and there was a big ‘angel’ fad a few years back–lots of people like angels in a sort of generic way without necessarily linking it to a specific belief system. Some people like angels (nice, protective, love you unconditionally) and not Christianity (which has rules and may want you to repent and change). Does that make any sense?
That makes sense, dangermom. I’ve seen Touched by an Angel, and it struck me as being quite Christian though. I was introduced to it when I went to visit my father (he watches it on satellite).
I think he’s supposed to be channeling, or is possessed by, dead firefighter/soldier types. Notice the three glowing spheres that enter his body at the beginning and leave at the end of the video.
Well, I’ve never watched it myself, but my understanding is that it was more sort of generic and that they never used Christian terminology (bringing in Jesus or specific churches)–the same way Highway to Heaven used to talk about “the Boss”–so that while Christians might like it, it wouldn’t be specific enough to exclude other audiences. But as you can see I’m hardly an authority.
In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
When the sun ceases to shine; when the stars fall down and the mountains are blown away; when camels big with young are left untended and the wild beasts are brought together; when the records of men’s deed are laid open and the heaven is stripped bare: This will forever remain an abomination to all men: the utterance of an accused devil.
No, I’m sorry, but I would put my immortal soul on the line (like I’m not already going to Hell anyway  ) that he’s supposed to be Jesus.
Note the lyrics about having walked the Earth but could not stay “now I’m with you in a different way”. And “I still live, I did not die”?
I’m telling you, he’s supposed to be Jesus…Jesus the American.
I can’t beleive I’m here analysizing these lyrics…it’s enough to make my baby Jesus butt plug cry.
Now doesn’t that make you feel proud & patriotic as a motherfuck to be an American?
Pesonally I feel the video is incomplete without a video clip in the clouds of our congressmen standing on Capital Hill soon after 9/11 singing God Bless America.
Because you thought that was the ultimate glurgey moment, or because you wouldn’t want something you actually liked being associated with this crap?
I remember actually thinking that was an incredibly touching and powerful moment. Although, of course, my mindset on 9/11 itself was, like that of most people, quite a bit different than it has been under any other circumstances.
